Wii sells over 2 million units in November
Despite a souring economy, the games industry is looking hale and hearty, according to the latest NPD report. November revenues were up 10 percent over last year to nearly $3 billion, with strong sales both in the hardware and software segments, and of course a continued domination of the sales charts by Nintendo.
While Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo all performed well, the latter managed to move an unprecedented 2.04 million units of Wiis – over twice what it sold during November of 2007 when its supply was considerably more constrained. Nintendo’s DS handheld sold an equally impressive 1.57 million units, followed by the Xbox 360 which more than doubled PlayStation 3 sales at 836,000 units compared to 378,000, despite both systems seeing monster titles release this past month.
On the software side, Microsoft and Epic Games’ Gears of War 2 took the gold, reaching sales of 1.56 million units in November. Activision Blizzard’s Call of Duty: World at War claimed second spot with 1.41 million copies sold on the Xbox 360, though if you factor in PS3 sales as well then the game breaks the 2 million mark. Other top selling titles for the month include Wii Fit, Guitar Hero: World Tour and Left 4 Dead.
