Vodafone unveils Android-powered HTC Magic

Although many had expected a flood of Google Android based smartphones to make an appearance at this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, only a single unit has stepped into the limelight: The HTC Magic. Manufactured by the same company responsible for the first Android phone, the new device features a 3.2-inch touch screen and trackball navigator but does not have a slide out QWERTY keyboard like the T-Mobile G1.

The phone has a 3.2MP camera which now can take video, HSDPA/WCDMA and Wi-Fi connectivity, Bluetooth, a GPS module and a sleeker design compared to the G1 as well as an updated Android operating system. On the software side, the Magic will of course ship with a range of Google applications along with the Webkit-based Android Internet browser and Android Market. Pricing details have not yet been announced and at least initially the HTC Magic will only be available in Europe through Vodafone, one of the most recent members of the Open Handset Alliance.
