Nintendo DS hits 100 million milestone
It seems hard to believe that despite a rather underwhelming release almost five years ago the Nintendo DS franchise is still going strong. Now as it prepares to launch the revamped DSi handheld in the United States, Nintendo has announced it just shipped its 100 millionth unit this week – two times the amount of its most direct competitor the Sony PSP.
The milestone combines sales of the original DS along with the trimmed-down DS Lite and the dual-camera DSi, which was released in Japan last November. This puts the DS alongside only three other systems to have reached that worldwide shipment volume: the Nintendo GameBoy, the Sony PlayStation, and PlayStation 2. Equally impressive is the success of DS software. According to the company, some 83 DS titles have reached 1+ million units sold worldwide and seven have surpassed the 10 million figure.
