New BlackBerry Storm coming in September?

By on April 8, 2009, 5:44 PM
The BlackBerry Storm has been available just for a few months but word of its replacement is already starting to circulate. Citing unnamed inside sources, SlashGear claims the Storm 2 will include Wi-Fi connectivity to complement the 3G it already offers and should hit the market around September – which would mean a less than a one-year run for the original BlackBerry Storm.

There were not too many other details revealed, but a separate report by Boy Genius adds that two of its independent sources have confirmed that a new screen will come with the next Storm in order to make typing easier, one of the main complaints with the original device, and might also include a 5-megapixel camera. None of this has been confirmed by RIM, of course, so we’ll just have to wait and see how the rumors pan out.

Well "" has also jumped on the confirmation bandwagon for a refreshed Storm 2 (though we don't know if this will be the official name yet). Looks like the main changes are addition of WiFi, updated touch screen with better typing ability and 5mp cam. This was a very popular phone at launch but sadly it had lots of issues right out of the gate. Issues that have only been partially corrected. I feared many of the problems were indeed hardware based and non-correctable via just software updates of which there have been many beta releases but only one official attempt to fix this phone. The 2009/2010 time frame is also close enough for the possibility of an LTE (G4) version perhaps though no one has said this yet. I think RIM is doing the right thing in redoing this phone to make it right and the sooner the better. If all goes well it truly will be the killer phone originally promised!

The Storm just had too many failings - No Wifi, no swipe inertia (scrolling sucks) and its slow slow sloooow... Just a few things I didn't like about it when I tried it out. I imagine the experience is even worse when you actually own one, since you'll have the time to find all of the freezing and crashing everyone talks about online. heh.RIM better do it right, this time!

Damn. I am planning on upgrading to a Storm in a few weeks. I'm sick of my old phone and want something new. I guess I'll give it a whirl and see how I like it.Maybe they'll offer free upgrades to people who purchase the original Storm 6 months prior :-) (Wishful thinking never hurt anyone)

I have the storm and love it. Yes it does have a few quarks... No flick scrolling, Dust under screen, slow unless u use a beta OS like I am now (works nice and fast). But over all it is an awesome device. I stream music using Slacker and Iheartradio. I have GPS replacement using Garmin GPS mobile software, I have weatherbug, awesome much more. Sure its not 100% awesome but I still wouldn't trade it for nothing!
