Toshiba unveils half-terabyte, 7200rpm laptop drive
Toshiba has unveiled a new line of "high-performance" hard drives for use in laptops and all-in-one desktops. The four-model MKxx56GSY series is an expansion of Toshiba's portfolio of 2.5-inch drives, operating at 7,200 rpm and reaching up to a half-terabyte capacity with two platters and a maximum areal density of 395 gigabits per square inch on the top end model.
The drives are claimed to transfer data at 1,255Mb/s, a 23 percent improvement over earlier versions, while energy consumption efficiency is reportedly increased by 28 percent. Other drive specifications include an average seek time of 11ms, 16MB of buffer memory, and the usual shock protection features.
The new line is set to enter mass production in Q4 2009 and will also be available in 160GB, 250GB and 320GB versions. Pricing and availability information has yet to be announced.
