Motorola Droid users experiencing email deletion bug

By on December 9, 2009, 5:23 PM
According to several customer reports on the Verizon forum, Motorola Droid users are suffering from some form of an email bug. Droid owners say the glitch deletes their Exchange and POP email accounts, along with all contained messages. While the accounts can be reconfigured, users say the anomaly eventually strikes again a week or two later.

It would seem that corporate email accounts are the most affected, and on the bright side, users say their calendar and contact information is unaffected. Users have begun troubleshooting by removing certain apps they believe may be responsible, but have not found a solution. Verizon has not acknowledged the problem yet, but it's safe to assume they will investigate the issue and will hopefully offer a fix as soon as possible.

Have you experienced the Droid email bug described by others?

The problem is (and it shows later in the thread) is an app Called Advanced Task Killer. Not that there is anything actually wrong with the app itself, but because some people are so obsessively anal about stopping processes on their phone, the kill off everything, and then wonder why they have problems.

The problem in this case is that the users think they are smarter than the phone, and that simply isn't the case.

Guest said:

I run that app and disagree. I should have to power to control how mant apps are running on my phone, I should have to power to close them. Oh and no problems here with deleted emails here.

I had this happen to me today for the first time after getting my Droid the day it became available. I had a POP3 and an exchange account set up and in the middle of the day, even after checking email multiple times, both of my accounts just disappeared. I searched some forums and found others with the same problem. Some people thought it might be the advanced task killer causing the problem, but I think the task killing programs are one of the most popular so it makes sense that most people will have it. I don't have the advanced task killer but a similar program so I guess that could be it. I just updated to 2.0.1 last night so I don't think it will be fixed until the next update.

Posting from my Droid. :)

Your messages only get deleted in bulks if you enter gmail, settings, account and import as pop3 and do not check the box that says leave messages on the server. just and fyi, no a bug an option you select when giving google server the option to push the e-mail to you.

I'd be interested in the Droid feedback too. We use Blackberries right now, and I personally am growing to hate my Pearl, the word guessing when typing is irritatingly wrong often, and having to do a battery pull reset farm more often than we should have to has become a sore point for our crew...

Guest said:

If you're thinking of getting a droid definately go for the plunge and do it. I LOVE my droid, and havent experienced the email deletion yet. Once you use the phone for a bit you realize what it can do, and you wont want to put it down.

I have the advanced app killer and havent had any problems. I like to keep control of what apps I keep running and thanks to that I havent had any issues with my battery like most people that have complained it dies quickly. Well, DUH if you have 100 apps (slight exaggeration of course) running in the background no wonder why your battery drains.

Your phone doesn't rid of emails that would probably be a waste of time anyways.

Droid Does.

But seriously, that could be an issue.

When I first looked at the Droid I was concerned about my outlook not being able to sync etc. I went ahead and got one and set up forwarding from my Corporate and personal emails to a new Gmail account. This is a good workaround if this is a bug deleting emails. Would delete the phone emails but not your Outlook on your PC.

For those of you on the fence like I was. I had a Samsung I760 and my wife has a Pearl, best decision I have made. So far the Droid does 22 of 25 items on my wish list. Hoping 2 of the 3 will be done soon through apps. What's funny is my bill from Verizon actually went down $2 a month on our family plan.

I love my Droids! I have just experienced a sync issue with my exchange server last night and still

It now says my phone sync is incompatible - was fine for the past month! I only sync with my calendar not email - anyone else get this? Phone update came this am but I think this. Started yesterday.

The only Droid issue I have had is the sound/speaker bug, which requires a soft reboot (cntrl-alt-delete) to reset. I haven't had this bug hit me in several weeks, so I am wondering if an on the air update has fixed it.

Phone worked flawlessly until last night the UPDATE 2.01 blew up my email setup. This morning i have no email account any more on droid and i cannot get it to successfully reconnect after I readded it back. I have to swtich back to my company BES server cause no email on the phone is a deal breaker for me and a business killer...

Guest said:

I am definitely experiencing this issue. No problems with gmail. However, my exchange account just disappears and I am back to the setup page. I have also noticed that sometimes the email header has the incorrect email body. Has happened several times before and after the 2.01 update. I will remove advanced task killer free as others have suggested this may be the problem.

i have this issue...a ton. This is my second phone and it has the same issue as the first. It is only deleting my Exchange settings but when it happens it will do an initial sync after set up again and then it will take a few hours to re-sync. If this does not stop then there is no point in keeping this phone...i need my corportae email...anyone have a fix?

Guest said:

Is there a way to keep e-mails in the e-mail app (not gmail)? Every time I synch my laptop to my personal exchange server, it removes the e-mails from the Droid. Even though I have them safely downloaded to Entourage, I would still like to keep some important ones on my phone for ready reference.

Guest said:

I have been experiencing the same problem. I thought it was a setting I had to adjust, but apparently, from reading the article, it is not. All my emails from various accounts are being deleted (optonline, aol, hotmail).

Guest said:

My exchange and pop3 email accounts were just deleted now. I have never downloaded the advanced task killer app, so that is not the problem.

Guest said:

i too have had this issue, numerous times over the past few weeks. it is to the point that it is so annoying i am ready to ask for a refund. When will verizon or motorola acknowledge this is an issue and look into it?

Guest said:

I have been having the same issue, although exclusively with my Exchange account. All disappears except for the contacts (well, partially). Rather irritating, but hopefully when they fix it they'll fix the search/sort/filter functions for Exchange accounts - there is nothing now, which is deeply frustrating for business users.

Guest said:

i have the same problem on my droid. pop and exchange accounts disappear daily. i have repeated this problem 3 times = known bug.

Google please fix this as this has been going on for weeks across multiple users and is a serious flaw for an otherwise fine experience.

Guest said:

Yes this problem has effexted my phone 3 times now and its getting old. I've gone into Verizon to have them address this and all they will do is have me start a new email account???? this is BS and hard to do business on a smart phone thats not working. I waste apx 1 hour a day trying to get this phone to work. its a pain to have to go to my net book or my PC when I need to send an email, I'm questiong why I'm paying so much money for a service I can not uses.

Guest said:

I lost my e-mails on my phone this morning but not my contacts or calendar. I have had the phone for one week and have not downloaded any apps. Fortunately my e-mails are still on my e-mail server. Is there a quick way to re-sync or do I need to start from scratch?

Guest said:

I was able to speak to someone inside of Google's development team. It is a "known bug and they are working on a patch." This was two weeks ago. I guess shipping their new Nexus Phone has been more important.

Google is going to have to do better on mission critical apps - this is bush league.

Guest said:

My wife and I both purchased Droids about 2 weeks ago. Everything was working fine with both our corporate e-mail and msn until yesterday. We then lost all e-mails from corporate and new ones are corrupted in that when we open up it is a different content from someone else. My MSN e-mail now also is corrupted and same thing happens. Verizzon technical and Motorola were of no help. Obviously this is a major problem.

Guest said:

negative, do your homework

Guest said:

Yes, I too have suffered from my e-mail accounts dissapearing, one configured to my office's Exchange 2007 Server, and two other Pop3 accounts, every couple of weeks, they just dissapear.

Guest said:

I have had this issue surface several times with my email accounts, one exchange, one IMAP. Happens about once a week and is a royal pain. I do not run any of the task killer apps, so that is not the issue, at least in my case. According to google, there is supposedly a maintenance release coming out soon, hoping it fixes this issue or I am back to the blackberry, which would suck, but at least it works. Would love to go iphone, but AT&T has poor coverage in my area.

I have experienced the email account deletion problem. I have five different email accounts, and it took quite a bit of time to set them up again. Today I replied to an email on my phone, but the message body was substituted with the body of an entirely different message. The confused reply from my recipient was also substituted.

Guest said:

I'm another really, really frustrated Motorola Droid user. Now I remember why I hate getting a new phone when my contract is up. I have had the phone for two days, have not downloaded a single app, and all of my emails disappear within an hour of receipt. We have spend hours on the phone with Verizon and the same thing keeps happening even after we reset everything. I'm returning the phone...and they better not even try to charge me the blessed $35 restocking charge. I'm ready to charge them!

Guest said:

I had 3 email accounts (2 exchange, 1 imap) set up since day one with no problems.. it's been close to 2 months. Today I noticed all the email accounts were gone. Not sure what triggered it but I haven't been using any different apps and the android update last month didn't immediately trigger the problem so the person that caught the update and then lost the accounts just ran into a coincidence.

Guest said:

I don't know if this tracks others' experience, but it appears that the bug has to do with when it cannot connect to incoming or outgoing email, it goes into never-never land and trashes the configuration for email.

I have had the same problem happen four times since getting the phone in mid December. I have found that it appears to happen right after there is a failure to communicate to the mail server, for whatever reason. I noticed it specifically when I was in our local mall that had WiFi. I turned on the WiFi and connected, and then tried to check my email. The hot spot provider was blocking every port but 80 and 443, so naturally things like IMAP and the Exchange stuff didn't work. It tried a couple of times, gave me an error saying it couldn't connect, and then everything was gone.

As soon as I put it back on 3G and re-entered my information, everything came back.

Guest said:

I have also experienced the e-mail account deletion issue. One day my exchange and two pop3 accounts all disappeared! I re-set them up, but now I am experiencing an issue where my e-mails "combine" with themselves. I get an e-mail from a friend with a header and subject to my exchange account, but when I open the e-mail on my Droid, the body of the e-mail is from a completely different e-mail. It is definitely something to do with the Droid because if I go to my exchange account online, the e-mails are as they should be with the header and body. I have never downloaded this advanced task killer, so that can't be the issue. My e-mail is basically useless right now on the Droid. What the h*** is going on Google?

Guest said:

This post misses the point on the bug: The message isn't getting deleted; the account is getting deleted from the e-mail app. The settings still shows the accounts, but they have to be reconfigured before you can actually get into them.

Guest said:

Just happen to me. Deleted my Exchange account, Hotmail and ironically my Google Apps account. No problem with Gmail. Going to try Touchdown.

Guest said:

Exchange email settings disappeared today for the first time. No ATK installed. Interesting that GMAIL unaffected. Odd that nly the competitors email products appear to be affected...

Anybody rmember Netscape?

Guest said:

I had my exchange and yahoo accounts disappear but I don't have the Advance Task Killer app. I have gone in and manually killed a few apps but I don't know if that's what caused the problem. If I go to my sync settings page the email accounts are listed but I can't sync with them.

I love this phone so this isn't a deal-breaker but it sure is a pain to set up the accounts again, as it took a while to figure out how to do it. This time I'll write it down do I can refer to it in the future.

Hopefully, Google will provide another upgrade soon that will take care of this problem.

Guest said:

yes, it is happening here with deletions every 24hrs.it will keep load new messages for 24hrs. using comcast server and outlook. verizon tech no help, local store no help. can not do business like this. if there was wireless sync with home ms office that would help.need to fix now or retool.

I've been having the email deletion issue occur about every few days. It affects my exchange and my AOL accounts.

If anyone else comes up with solutions, please post them.

Within the last two days, I've had an additional problem. Both my email accounts are present, but neither account permits me to open an email. Everytime I attempt to open an email on either AOL or exchange, I receive the following message:

"Sorry! The application Email (process.android.email) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again). Force Close."

I had that error message only occassionally appear a few weeks ago, but I now receive the above error everytime I attempt to open an email - in effect, freezing my email accounts.

Very frustrating and disappointing ....

It got me today - and I can't reconfigure the email account. Hellllllllp!

Guest said:

I had this very same problem. My email accounts would simply disappear and sometimes get corrupted (email headers connected to different messages). Motorola, Google and Verizon were worthless. In fact, Verizon was worse than useless. When I called to complain about the problem, when they found out I was connected to an enterprise server, they increased the amount they were charging me from $30 for data to $45 for data. When I saw that on my bill, I was furious and they changed it back to $30.

My solution was to buy the Touchdown application. Now it works fine, with an occasional instance where I have to force the application to close. However, when it reopens everything is still there and it works great.

Guest said:

This has happened to me twice, the second time last night. I called Verizon Wireless the first time (about a month ago) and they said it was a "known issue" but there was no resolution yet.

Guest said:

I've had my droid for a week and had to reconfigure the exchange email 2 times already. The first time was about 2-3 days and then the next was another 2-3 days. No problems with my gmail account which is pushing mail also.

The account still shows but when I try to use it, the account wants to be configured. It shows in the accounts but cannot access it.

I'm about done with this because I don't have an hour to wait everytime I try to sync bakc up my accounts. service sucks in my area of WY as well so gotta go to BB on GSM.

Guest said:

Touchdown has the same problem. Just give it time and it will loose all of the account settings and email. With Touchdown it is easy to backup the account settings and easy to restore them after the Droid kills everything.

Guest said:

I was able to set up my personal email account on the Droid (not through Google), but messages were deleted as soon as they hit my phone. The only remedy I found was to access my personal email server and forward a copy of my emails to the Google account that was established by Verizon when I purchased my phone. I was ready to take my phone back to Verizon because I hated the email problem, but this fixed it for good!

Guest said:

I have had the same problem, at least 8 times in the 2 weeks I have had the phone. I have never downloaded the app mentioned either. After a hard reset while on the phone with Verizon, I'm still having the problem. They are now sending me a new phone and I'm hopeful there are no more problems, but after reading these posts, it's not likely. When it happens, all email accoungs I have set up disappear, even gmail.

New Droid

I bought 2 droid phones last month. The day before yesterday, Friday I downloaded the upgrade for visual vm and it asked for a pin number which I had never been given. After review of the app I decided to unistall it. When I went to look at my e-mails they were gone along with my account. Now when I enter my address and such I can't get back into my e-mails. Help anybody?
