Portal 2 is official, coming this holiday season

It's been over two years since the original Portal captivated cake lovers everywhere, and a proper sequel is now officially on the way. The first title accumulated such a following that it was arguably more popular than Half Life 2: Episode Two or Team Fortress 2 (other titles included in The Orange Box).

Word of a sequel surfaced around June of 2008 when news broke that Valve was hiring an actor to voice Cave Johnson, who was speculated to be the title's main antagonist. Valve fueled anticipation of a new game this week, after a couple of updates to Portal -- one of which introduced new ending.

Putting rumors to rest, Game Informer has now revealed that its April 2010 cover story will be Portal 2. Very limited details have been given, but the game will be a "full-fledged, standalone sequel" with "new gameplay mechanics, storyline, and some surprising new twists."

The magazine will ship with a 12-page feature on Portal 2, and it should hit newsstands soon enough. Also, Valve says the title will launch this holiday season. In the meantime, you'll have to make do with the provided cover shots, which you can view in full here.

  1. Finally. Gonna get the cake this time.

  2. On of the best games of all times gets a Sequal! I can't wait for this, Day 1 buy for me.

  3. Well, this is great. I actually thought it would be announced march 11, though this is nice too. Maybe we'll get a trailer on march 11. Gamestop claims it has co-op multiplayer, and that it's 50 dollars. I'm not sure whether to trust that information.

  4. I have Portal, but i haven't played it yet. I might consider playing portal right before playing portal 2 ^_^

  5. I've never heard of this series but by these comments it seems I'm missing out. Is this a puzzle game similar to Cube for Psone? If so, I'll pass.

No, it's closer to HL2 then to D-Cube. If you haven't played this, especially when you own it, you really missed something. Portal has a great story, has great gameplay, and involves some inuitive thinking. It's best described as a first-person puzzle platformer imo.

  7. It's hard to overstate my satisfaction!

  8. Oh, and I especially like the fact that the news is coming to print! I subscribe to Game Informer and am pleased that print hasn't been totally killed by on-line. First, its hard to wait for my 12-page feature on Portal 2, then the long wait for the game to come out! Please let it be on time!

  9. Never really a major fan of the game, Portal Prelude I believe is just a demo of the first couple levels? Looking forward to a new graphical engine for the next generation of HL, CS, and TF!

  11. I haven't played the first portal yet. I know I should, I know it's supposed to be great but I just haven't gotten it yet.

  12. Portal = awesome. Portal 2 = Cant wait!

  13. Portal was good, but I'd like to see the next installment of HL2 even more. Hopefully they release both at the same time again.

  14. Original game was better than expected. Had a very clever storyline and great ending. If you like some mind puzzles. You will love this.

  15. I guess it is time to go play the first one...

  16. jungle maps! and back to aperture?? it was destroyed right?...i was hopping for the outside world like buildings and other maps... but its still awesome anyway lol. Cant ******* wait!!!!! Wohooooooooo!

  17. It's good to hear that Portal will be released already since Portal I is short. The great thing about it is that the video game is very original and new to gamers' tastes...

Thanks, that sounds much more appealing. I'll check out the first one. I haven't bought a game since borderlands so I kinda need something to play.

  19. What is this game about? sorry to be a newb, but it seems to get the hype. So im curious and also open to all types of PC games!

  20. lol in portal I just ran random around came to the robot thing (i did not know it was the boss) easily beating him and then I think: WTF NO BOSS ?!?!

  21. 1 WORD: EXCITED

  22. the first portal was AMAZING. i cannot wait for the second one to come out. i still have that 'still alive' song stuck in my head lol

  23. Great news! I played the first one and really liked it, which is saying a lot because I'm not a hard core gamer. I'll certainly try to grab this one when it's released.

  24. I think I'm going to go over my projected video game budget! It's a good thing I have a good job! But Valve, please release Half-Life 2: Episode 3 already!!!

  25. To bad the user who posted it exceeded their bandwidth for image hosting :-)
