RockStar Games has released an iOS version of the popular third-person shooter Max Payne. The title has been optimized for iOS devices and includes HD graphics, high-res textures, customizable controls and access to Social Club, a free online service that delivers unique in-game content and other features to certain games.
Max Payne was released for PC in July 2001 and tells the story of a fugitive undercover cop that has been framed for murder and is being hunted by the mob and the police. Just three years earlier, his wife and newborn were slain during a home invasion by junkies high on a new drug called Valkyr. Payne is ultimately injected with the drug himself which leads players on a while ride inside the head of an overdosed individual.
The game was the first to implement bullet time, a form of slow motion that was made popular two years earlier in the film The Matrix. The effect was in development well before the movie was released but that didn’t stop many from believing that the feature was a direct result of the film. The designers did include several references to The Matrix in the game, however, to take advantage of the movie’s hype.
The franchise has since sold over 7.5 million copies and will likely sell many more with the release of Max Payne: Mobile. Interested gamers can pick up the title for $2.99 in the App Store for iPad, iPhone or iPod touch. Android users will have to wait until April 26 to get their hands on the game.
