Samsung has taken the wraps off of their new Windows 8 tablets at IFA 2012 this week. Joining the South Korean giant's growing family are the Series 5 and Series 7 slates as well as the global versions which will be known as the Ativ Smart PC and Ativ Smart PC Pro Windows 8 tablets.

Aesthetically, the Series 5 and Series 7 units look identical to their global counterparts - the only major changes are found within. But before we get ahead of ourselves, let's start with the US-based tablets.

The 11-inch Series 5 offers up an Intel Atom-based Clover Trail processor, 2GB of RAM, a 64GB solid state drive and a screen resolution of 1,366 x 768. Battery life is estimated at around nine hours on the Series 5. The Series 7 ships with the same 11-inch screen although at full 1080p resolution, a more powerful Core i5 processor, 4GB of system memory and a larger 128GB SSD. We are told that the Series 7 will be good for between four and five hours of life on a single charge.

The Ativ Smart PC and Smart PC Pro will ship with the same processor options as their US twins. The Pro will offer up twice the amount of storage as the Series 7 (256GB vs. 128GB) while both systems have better battery life ratings - up to 13.5 hours for the Smart PC and eight hours for the Pro. Otherwise, everything else between the regional and global units looks to be the same.

The Series 5 will be priced at $649 while the beefier Series 7 will retail for $1,119; both units will be available starting October 26. No word yet on how much the Ativ Smart PC and Smart PC Pro will cost or when they will ship.
