Google to unveil desktop search
"It's like photographic memory for your computer--if you've seen it before, you should be able to find it." - Marissa Mayer, director of consumer Web products at Google.
More parties want in on the desktop search game, and this time it's Google who have released something. The company today unveiled its first-generation desktop application for searching through personal files and Web history stored locally on a PC. According to sources, the application lets people retrieve e-mail, Microsoft Office documents, AOL chat logs and a history of Web pages previously viewed, all via a Web browser.
Yahoo, Microsoft and AOL also have similar products out or on their way, as the battle for this particular market heats up. The race to integrate Web navigation with PC search is on. It’s anyone's guess yet as to the eventual winner.

| Astro on October 14, 2004 4:36 PM | Yeah it works fine for everything I need in Firefox. Just today I got a call from a company I sent a resume to long ago, and I used the Google Desktop Search to locate the email. My thing is, since July, I've been using Mozilla Thunderbird for email. I need Google to support Thunderbird, which it doesn't at this moment.
