BloodRaven 09-20-2004, 11:12 PM i just got the sims 2 and it is very choppy when i play it....almost to the point to where i cant play it, the only way i can even get it playable is playing the game thru window mode and not fullscreen. sure it works fine then but id much rather play it fullscreen. and its not my computer cuz i have more than enough to power the game. hopefully its just a glitch that a simple patch can fix but i really want to know whats going on and if anyone else is having the same problem.......by the way, this game rocks, i highly recommend this game to every one who enjoyed playing the first sims.
BloodRaven 09-23-2004, 06:54 PM ok it might have been a hardware problem cuz now that i upgraded, it works just fine...
chomp_babe 09-24-2004, 01:20 PM Hi I was just wondering what exactly you upgraded because I am experiencing a similar problem. If you could reply I would be very grateful.
Thanx
__chomp_babe__
LNCPapa 09-24-2004, 01:46 PM I assume you upgraded your video card? Or was it your processor? I've just never heard anyone say that a 5600 was more than enough for anything.
The General 09-24-2004, 05:59 PM i found it choppy but i went to nvidia.com and got the 61.77 drivers that works with most nvidia cards. it improved quite a lot but still gets choppy when theres a lot goin on. my spec should be able to run it better as Quake 3 runs sweet on it.
Deansta 09-26-2004, 09:02 AM Im haivng real trouble with this. Im running a high spec comp, more than enough for the game, but after about 7 seconds on the main page once the game has loaded, it just locks up. The whole computer freezes, and there is no way of gettin out of it as it seems to lock up the mouse and keyboard too, forcing a reset. Has anyone else had this and how can i improve it? - i have the latest drivers, so i dont think thats the prob!

dubs1013 09-26-2004, 05:40 PM ok i have a bad chopping problem like some of you have or had. this is my graphics card...
Nvidia GeForce4 mx 440 with AGP8x
I think I installed 66.17 too, but it still choops, PLEASE HELP!
Deansta 09-26-2004, 05:48 PM i think i can help everyone. theres this kewl guy who alters the latest versions of drivers to optimise them. My version froze after a few seconds, these new drivers fixed that problem, so im sure they can help the choppy ness.
dubs1013 09-26-2004, 06:11 PM how do i do it? i sleceted my OS but which one should i download? and what is a mirror?
Deansta 09-26-2004, 06:33 PM u go to the driver brand u want. then click on the driver u want for ur grahics card, then ur OS. the mirrors are site which host the download, since it wud cost the guy loads to host them all himself. just pick one, anyone will do, and download it. extract it. and theres probs a read me in there. if not.... go to control panel/system/ hardware/ device manager / display adaptors (ur graphics card will be listed and its current driver) double click it / click the driver tab / update driver / from specified location / then click on browse and click on the file u downloaded and extracted(sumin like C:Programfiles: omega - or sumin) and then wen u find the file, say install driver. it will be like "warning this driver isnt signed by microsoft, even tho our drivers will probs cause more problems than if u installed a virus into ur windows folder" ...or sumin like that. but u say continue anyway, and make sure u always copy the files, cuz if u stop 1/2 way, or dont copy one of the new ones accross (wen it warns u for sum reason) ...ill have to spend the next 2 hours of my life typing up to tell u how to fix it. :P
dubs1013 09-26-2004, 07:34 PM Which one would i click on? you know what type of grafix xcard i have and i have windows xp, and what should i save it to/as
thnkxx
BloodRaven 09-26-2004, 11:45 PM when i got an upgrade i upgraded my proccesor to a AMD 64 3000+ and it worked a whole lot better. the stupid thing was that i had an AMD Athlon 2500+ and it ran like crapand another thing is my video card that has 256mb of ram on it and it doesnt seem like it. performance wise i mean. is that GeForce 5600 and good? or should i consider upgrading soon, and if so should i change to ATI? and another thing, in the bios there is a option called aperture size and sinse i have a 256 video card i thought that i should put it at 256 but i dont notice a performance chance. but yeah thats all i wanted to know for now, any info would help. thanks
Deansta 09-27-2004, 12:33 PM dubs, just save it sumwhere. just click on any of the mirrors, it duznt matter which one within the section for ur card and OS as theyre all the same file. download sites use mirrors so that if one goes down, u can use another and so that it spreads the downloads over many servers instead of one. save it anywhere u want for now. like in my "documents" "dubs folder" or anything that takes ur fancy. then extract it and such. on the newer ones, hes made an auto installer too since hes gettin better at coding. So just download. extract. run it. and if ur lucky it'l install itslef automatically when u open it.
0pal_t0ad 09-27-2004, 01:34 PM BloodRaven, i don't think it was ur processor 'cos i have a duron1600 and it runs smoothly but....
i do have a similar problem to you, Deansta. but mine only freezes when some skill levels increase. I notice a blue light starts appearing abovemy head but when gets to the size of a screw head(on a 19" @ 1024) it stops.
Deansta 09-27-2004, 03:58 PM oooo. duno wots that about. the graphics drivers from omega sorted mine out fine. runs as smooth as a hovercraft XD
BloodRaven 09-27-2004, 11:43 PM hmm, i got the omega drivers and all it did was make my games run choppy....it was wierd.
Deansta 10-01-2004, 04:04 PM very weird. a few of my mates used them and it fixed theres. sos bout that!

Hi! Anyone have any ideas how to solve this?!
JestersEye 11-11-2004, 03:01 AM I am also getting the "application crashed... will now terminate" error messages, but only after installing extra content into the download directory (sims2skin self-extracting files).
The strange part is that when I removed a portion of the files and then loaded the game, it worked just fine. Basically I could not find a corrupt file to hold responsible for the crashes, as each of the smaller groups worked, just not all together. Is there a maximum number of items allowable in the download directory, perhaps? :(
burningshed 11-15-2004, 04:49 AM Same problem, running on a shuttlex AMD 1800, 1Gig DDR, ATI 9000pro128 card blah blah blah, game runs for a while, then freezes (music keeps playing thou if you have a stereo on etc), small bright blue light appears above characters head and smiley faces etc etc wierd, still not sorted, begining to think about trashing whole system and buying a Mac......... did you find a solution?
I think its because my card is unsupported, and I was going to buy an Nvidia GeForce FX 5700... but I managed to spend all my money on a Gamecube! (which rocks by the way :D ) and Im going to try and convince my Dad to buy one for me!
Flubino 12-30-2004, 04:52 PM I'm beginning to think that this is a sick joke from one of the code monkeys at EA. From what I have read it affects NVIDIA cards the most frequently (or maybe their owners are just the most vocal) and people with systems way above the minimum spec.
For instance; my girlfriends machine, 3 months old:
AMD Athlon XP 3000 2.1 GHz
512 MB Ram,
NVIDIA GeForce FX5200 with all the latest drivers
100 odd GB free disk space
Direct X 9c seems to work fine too.
Can't see why anything wouldn't run on this.... but Sims 2 doesn't, or at least it does for about 10 mins and as soon as you try to:
Build anything
Create a person
Save (bit of a problem that one)
- it crashes.
We seem to have found a partial solution (after messing around for a while) -
- Start -> Run -> "DXDIAG"
Brings up a diagnostic tool for Direct X -
Then go to "More Help" - OVERRIDE Direct Draws Refresh Rate - click OVERRIDE and reduce the value to somewhere arround 50.
It is still not perfect but at least we can play it like that.
For some things it seems we need to turn the sound off too (right click on the shortcut and at the end of the command line type -nosound)
Hope that this helps someone else out there, a bit of an odd solution but it seems to work for us. - Oh and if anyone has any better suggestions - do let us know.
Cheers

Seems like loads of Sims 2 users are suffering the same crashing and terminating problem. I got a bit further with the 14Mb patch from EA and have tried the DirectX tweak but still suffering. A friend has no problem running with XP but I've got 2000. Is 2000 common to the problem?

Is 2000 common to the problem? From what I've seen, just as many XP users are having the same problem. Most likely, it isn't the OS, it's the cards or the drivers -- having all the bells and whistles necessary to support the demands of Sims 2.
leanmoha 01-02-2005, 04:23 AM Hey all I'm new to this
I was actually looking up how to get downloaded lots to show up in the neighbourhood lot bin thing. You know where all the unused building/lots are for you to select to add into the nieghbourhood. For some reason I install the files but the lots don't show up in the game.
Anyways I came across this discussion and I've got to say the only problem I've had with the Sims 2 has been the one of program terminating error after the EAgames logo. This happened last week but it had worked fine prior to that. Anyway, I suspected this was due to some dugy file I'd downloaded or something and simply reinstalled remembering not to delete my saved game and its been fine since.
Anyways BloodRaven you upgrading to an Athlon 64 seems a bit like over kill, you must really love this game. Then again I'm not an avid gamer so won't be going Athlon64 till I can get it cheap on eBay or I really desperately need to and can find a M/B that has all the features my current one has. My specs are
Athlon XP 2400 (FSB 266)
Gigabyte 7DXR+ motherboard (PC2100 upswitch)
ATI Radeon 9500 128mb DDR (9700 chipset)
WinXP SP2
1gig DDR
160Gig HHD (120 x 1 + 40 x 1)
Creative SB Audigy Platinum (I'm running the KX project drivers and not creative as I've discovered they're useless when it comes to writing software that works)
not sure what version of DX9 I'm running but its DX9 anyways
So as you can see your system b4 you went Athlon64 outstrips mine for speed at least. And I do a lot of graphics and audio work as well as watch digital satellite tv no problems. So your problem definitely was not the CPU, infact I have a funny feeling, but don't quote me on this, that the problem is to do with the NVIDIA GeForce and GeForce based graphics cards.
I know that probably sounds silly especially seeing that for years now NVIDIA GeForce cards have been the best, but as I discovered when changing from my old ATI 7200 AIW card to my current one not all graphics cards ATI or NVIDIA GeForce are fully compatible with DX9. So they may work fine with some games and not with others. This compatibility problem seemed from all I read to be more prevelant in NVIDIA cards comparable to the ATI Radeon 9200 and 9600.
I bought with DX9 in mind because, even thought I was not why I upgraded, I was planning to get Max Payne 2 when it came out and I know that required DX9 as it turned out it worked ok even with my slow 7200 AIW card. I was also told that ATI cards though not as fast as their NVIDIA GeForce counterparts tend to be more rugged, and given that most games I'm come across seem to always have special installation drivers for GeForce cards I though the guy at the shop had a good point.
I don't know how NVIDIA package their drivers but all ATI familly group cards use exactly the same drivers so my old Radeon 7200 AIW uses exactly the same driver as my Radeon 9500 and the top-end 9800XT. So that's got the bonus of equality across the board and no nasty shocks assuming the drivers were written correctly in the first place, you know!!
If you're runing Win2000 you might want to get hold of SP4, from the minimum requirement listed iPods it seems this is the closest Win2000 gets to WinXP. So I guess XP is special after all??

justine___ 04-16-2006, 06:33 AM I'm having some troubles with the sims 2.
I had a married couple, but the wife caught the husband and the gardener together in bed.
The wife dumped the guy, but now he doesn't seem to be on the lot any more.
What should I do now?
Sharkfood 04-16-2006, 06:48 PM For the original poster-
The "smooth edges" option is only available for videocards that have antialiasing support. You likely do not have such a videocard. Luckily, there are MANY aftermarket videocards with this option for $45-$75 USD you can upgrade to.
If you can find out what kind of PC you have, we can give you links where you can order an upgraded videocard with antialiasing for enabling smooth edges in Sims2. Another benefit is an aftermarket videocard will also likely allow you to increase the resolution or make the framerate faster/snappier as well.
If you're unsure how to find out what PC you have, you can download and run the following:
http://www.cpuid.com/download/cpu-z-133.zip
When you unzip and run this tool, it has an option on the last tab (About tab) for "Register Dump".. pick a filename and save this on your desktop. You can open this with Notepad, copy/paste here or just attach that file as it will have all your system's hardware information within.
__justine- you can try the phone to see if you can call the husband? He probably moved out. Either that or he and the gardner are now on their honeymoon LOL.

It is because of your poor graphic card. I guess it is an in-built graphic card.
My graphic card is NVIDIA gfx 5200 256 mb,I can play it smoothly in 800*600 resolution.
babyeinstein 06-17-2006, 05:20 AM After i downloaded some new lots i loaded sims 2. at the menu the 'Pleasantview'
