Does anyone know how to convert a Dell Tag number to an Express Service Code number. I have been informed that it is some kind of mathmatical conversion. I have Tag but not Express Service Code. I purchased Laptop at auction and need Express Service Code along with Tag to register change in ownership with Dell.

Hi all! I´ve just bought a Dell Latitude D610 in Germany in a low price ... It has a locked bios setup. I can use the computer, but I am not able to make any changes (for example switch on wireless...)
From where can I get a factory admin password? Or can you help me in it?
System number is the following: 7Q47S1J-595B

Anyway: Where can I check the history of this machine?
I tried this latitude.exe, but I became an invalid password. Are there any other solution? Please if you have, send me in E-mail (with a short instruction) (email removed)
THX!

Well, I had mixed results! The good news is that it worked and I have access to now. Thanks! The bad news is that now battery will not charge. Power cable is working without battery so power it getting to computer but the battery charge light does not come on and the battery is not now charging. It was working fine prior to shorting trick. I have run Dell diagnostic and on test its says battery charging, but again, it is not and light indicating adapter connected and charging battery does not come on. Is there a way to fix this or is something “fried”? Should I attempt short again? It is not burned out light as when I use program to rest TAG and screen comes up that says it is erasing Eprom the adapter connection/battery charge light comes on. Just so you know all the facts, I also upgraded BIOS from A03 to A11.

Any Help?

The Configure Setup Password and the ADMIN BIOS Password are the SAME. You use the password to first Enable Configure Setup and the use it again to Disable the ADMIN Password. If you do not have this Password, email me at email removed and I will send you a ZipFile to make a Diskette that will delete and then reset the Service Tag. When you do this, the Password that is also stored on the EEProm Chip with the Service Tag is also erased

Paragon33,

I tried the Boot CD created from your Disk. It boots up, indicates System Id, Name & Bios revision and the note : etc ... (Y/N).
Pressing Y, it says
DELL ...

"EE-PCB.exe: Error 0"

then FDD calibration utility.

When I turn on the computer the bios settings are still locked ..

Do you have any idea ?

Thank U

First and foremost I want to THANK Paragon33 for the zip file he sent me
Then I want to share some experience I had.
I burned the extracted files to a bootable CD (I dont have floppy on my laptop)
The problem was that the OS was Windows 98SE (boot floppy image) and when I tried to start Autoexec.bat, an error message was displayed: "EE-CPB.EXE - no such file or directory". After 0.5 h I fidureg it out - this version of DOS I am using converts dashes "-" into underscores "_" and my file is read as EE_CPB.EXE instead of EE-CPB.EXE, but SVCTAG still searches for "dashed" version. So here is the solution in the case: run Autoexec.bat, remeber the SystemID value displayed and also look what is the file version that is needed,i.e. file that causes error (EE-CPB.EXE in my case).Look into the file SVCTAG.INF for the appropriate switches for the executable corresponding to your SystemID (in my case 011e: DELL:EE-CPB:ASSET:/nopause:/forcetype:/s) and run the executanle (my case EE_CPB.EXE xxxxxxx /nopause /forcetype /s) - use "_" instead of "-". This will erase EProm. Now run this: ASSET.COM xxxxxxx /s and you are DONE. (xxxxx is the service tag of your machine without # sign). Good luck to all. And thanks again Paragon33 :) :)

Doesn't work,

I checked in the svctag.inf list and I don't find the system Id of my computer : 0x0182. i think that's the reason svctag returns "error 0". Maybe there's a newer revision of the svctag & svctag.inf ....

Lamfuest, the diskette has worked for me on all the ones I have used it on, except the Inspiron 6000. That uses a different BIOS and password system very similar to the versions used on the old Inspiron 3000/3200/3500/7000/7500 series, which had only a System Password, no Admin or HDD option, and was not service tag based. There may be other models with the same type system. Incidentally, I have updated the files in the DST .zip file to include later models since Phuang made his CD ISO file and posted the link. I also have a later Dell Tech CD(7-20-05) with BIOS, Diagnostics, and Service Tag Software, but the size is too large to send by Email attachment. If anyone reading this has a server that can make it available by download, sing out and I'll mail you a copy you can use to make a download link.

I got the zip file wit software from paragon33 and booted into dos and run the software from a usb stick. reset the service tag and presto...all sorted.

in a nutshell, if it is only admin password that you need (that is you can access bios but cannot change settings) then you don't need to take your laptop apart to short pins on the eeprom chip - the software will do the job for you!

I finally came up with a successful bootable CDR version of the DST .zip File to make a floppy diskette I had previously sent to most of the folks who contacted me. This will allow Dell owners who do not have a floppy drive to use this useful software.

I have a Dell Latitude L400 that I was given because it wouldn't "start". I managed to re-format the Hard Drive by starting it on a Win 98 boot disk and then proceeded to try to load Windows 98 (it had had 2000 before it failed). This failed part way through and I got a message:

"Invalid VxD dynamic link call from VWIN32(01) + 00000714 to device "0009", service 1. Your windows configuration is invalid. Run windows setup again to correct this problem.

To continue running Windows press Y or enter. To quit the current program press N. If you continue your system may become unstable. Do you want to continue?"

When I typed Y I got "WINDOWS A fatal exception OE has occurred at 0167:BFF89763"

I tried reformatting and using my Dell D600 laptops XP disk instead. This all seemed to work until the loading devices stage where it just froze the machine at 34 minutes to go. I have tried again about 20 times and it always stops at the same place (34 mins). It just freezes up entirely.

Have you any ideas? Is this a password issue? When I go to setup the passwords list as clear or not active...

arty5ta

seems to me like a hardware problem. What specs has your laptop got? dodgy RAM or hard drive might give you that error.

jezza
10-26-2005, 10:27 AM
Spec seems to be as purchased - IBM Travelstar harddrive 20 GB, Intel's Low Voltage mobile Pentium III with SpeedStep technology at 700MHz, 128 MB SDRAM.

Why would it go so far and then freeze?

it remined me once I had a simmilar problem with winxp (always stopping at the same point of instalation) - it turned out to be a bad CD :)
in my opinion one or more of the three is faulty:
1. CD
2. CD-ROM
3. Hard Drive

I'll try another hard drive and CD Rom drive - but surely the Windows setup drive check would have thrown up any problems there - scandisk and format kicked up no problems. As for the CD, it seems a bit unlikely that Windows 98 and XP should have similar problems.

I'll report back on success! Thanks for your thoughts.

"VxD" stays for Virtual Driver, which means one or more of your drivers are loaded incorrectly. As was said there might be different reasons for that, from bad RAM, bad HDD or just corrupted copy of the file (which means the installation CD has problem. If I correctly understood you have same problem trying to install Win98 and Win XP, which makes me think that the problem is RAM. Unfortunately you cannot tell if your RAM is bad because BIOS tests the integrity of RAM and DOS uses only the conventinal part of it (first 640k) The "upper" memory is accessed during installation of Windows (also when running Windows) or with some special testing tools under DOS. (some DOS games use "upper" memory also)
So I suggest this - try replacing the memory chip and try install. In my experience (I had at least dozen like this) replacing memory helps. But beware (this is the tricky part) - a memory that works fine on one PC may not be compatible to other PC.
Also here http://www.memtest.org/ you can find a free memory test software (but even if memory passes the test that doesn't mean RAM is OK)
Good luck!

Hi I've bought Latitude c640 bios version a05 out of the local paper recently unfortunatley it's got the main password on it at bootup so i can get it to do anything I've looked for the epprom and I've found a HT24LC04 so I'm assuming it's similar to the others 24c02 types I've tried to short it out by using pins 3-6 and also pins 4-6 but to no avail ? can anybody help? it would be much appreciated. Not an economical one that I know of. Pull the harddrive and replace it. Before installing a new one in the laptop, rerun the DST program to delete and then reset your Service Tag. That will remove any hangover from the previous HDD Password on the EEProm Chip, and head off trouble later.
Since I posted this originally I have found a site which can clear Harddrive Passwords on some brands/Models of drives. I cleared a Toshiba MK4026GAX 40gb this afternoon at a cost of $49.50.
I have started a new thread here

Can anyone help me with it?? ("And i read complete Threat here, but nothing helps, because i have #***********-595B Series")

My Laptop Numbers:
Service Tag is: D8RM50J

I think that works on ALL of them

Since the CMOS stores all the settings, removing/replacing the battery will reset the BIOS password.

you're the 1st one that has solved the problem.Same thing happened to a friend of mine and i cleared the CMOS and no more password.

Yes, but that will not work on Dell laptops or at least the ones since the Latitude CP. Disconnecting the Reserve CMOS batter will reset BIOS Defaults, but the Passwords are stored on a different(EEProm) chip and that is not affected by disconnecting the CMOS Battery.

No jumper and disconnecting the cmos battery will not clear a password on the later Dells. You need to short the eeprom chip and then power cycle the board to clear the Primary BIOS Password(Grey Screen) then you reset the Service Tag. For an AdminPassword/Configure Setup Disabled, just deleting and then resetting the Service Tag will erase the EEProm and take care of that. I have the necessary instructions and ST software.
