You must get the Manufacturing Mode Screen before running the software; and it must persist. A momentary flash of that screen, or even if it hangs on for 15 seconds or so is not sufficient;it means the eeprom is not cleared beyond the "point of now return". Once you get there, the paper clip is not held in position any longer. I got 5 of these false positive results just like you are getting on the 1150 board, but I hit it right on the 6th try and it cleared to the MM Screen. You now know what I meant with 'later models trying your patience and persistence".
Thanks Paragon. I'm assuming when you say Manufacturing Mode Screen, you mean the screen that says to Hit FN+X? Here is where I'm a little confused because I've only seen this screen come up a handful of times. Most of the time when turning on the laptop and shorting the clip, it just goes straight to the boot device. If I hit F2, it goes into the BIOS. Is there a trick to getting this Mode to come up? Thanks for all your help!

Hey guys, without reading every page of this thread, is this thread mainly for Dell LAPTOP BIOS passwords?
Because I've got a Dell Dimension 2400 desktop with a "Setup Password", which does not erase when the BIOS is reset.
Does this thread cover that situation? Or can you tell me the quick fix?

Hello friends.
I have read all 22 pages so far of this thread But I couldn't find any info about a Dell Inspiron 4000. I think that the solution is to use the paper clip and then the software given by Paragon33. But my problem is that I can't find this chip in my laptop. Anybody knows where is located? and if I have to uncover only a small part of the laptop or open it completely?
Sorry for my bad english
Thanks in advance

Malcolm, I got your email, but have been busy with other matters today. I am getting ready to send the files out to you and three others in a short time. The C600 and Inspiron 4000 are hardware clones. There are 2 pictures in the Additions file with the chip location on the bottom side and the hole I cut in the aluminum sheathing(after removing it from the board, cutting the hole and then putting it back)

Hey Paragon any tips on getting to manufacturing mode? I just can't seem to get that screen to come up anymore. I got it to come up maybe 2 times but wasn't fast enough to hit FN-X before the screen disappeared. I was thinking is it a different pin short combo to get this to come up as maybe I was accidentally shorting different pins since thats easy to do? Thanks man!

I used 4/6 pins. Another user fed back that he was successful with 4/5 pins. The 4 pin is the VSS (ground) on the 24LC16B chip; pins 1, 2, and 3 are not connected internally

Remove the PCMCIA Hardware and lift the rubber insulatig sheet. Remove the PCMCIA Hardware and lift the rubber insulating sheet. I believe you wiil find it there; several types have been reported, but the D610s' chips all have 24 in the type number, are 3mmx4mm and have 8 connections. Pins 4/6 and 4/5 seem to work the best

NO-O-O! Using the wrong chip as target can ruin your board. If it is not there, it may be on the bottom of the board and under a metal brace

Get another board; that one is labeled R.I.P. Patience is virtue, particularly where laptops are the subject. I warned you most emphatically not to do that. You are the second person to fry a motherboard by shorting the wrong chip

The first thing they are going to ask for is the previous registered Dell owners' name(s) and they do not mean the person or dealer you bought it from necessarily, as they may have gotten it used and resold it. If you do not have that info, do not waste your time on the phone, as they will not help you. If you want to try online, this link is to the online forms
http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/change_order/en/tag_transfer
There is also an International form

I have built a circuit and read the data directly from the 24c02 chip on my inspiron 8000 Now I need to get the password from it. does anybody here know of a program that will convert hex to plain text?
. If anybody else wants to try to read the chip it is fairly easy just takes a 2 resistor 2 diode circut(2$ worth of parts at radio shack) and a free program called pony prog
here is the chip dump if any might be interested in taking a crack at it
SUCCESS!!!!!! My expensive paperweight is a usefull computer again!! Thanks to all who posted here and some other sites The shorting trick worked after about the 15th time (4&6 pin) All of you have been a big help! anyone needing help with an inspiron 8000 let me know Ill do my best to help :bounce:

Hi All!
Just to confirm that it's totally possible to reset the BIOS administrator password on the Dell Inspiron 8500 using the aforementioned paperclip trick.
If you are looking for the security chip on the 8500 it's located on the top of the motherboard about 5cm in from the headphone socket on the right of the laptop directly under the hard-drive caddy cage (you won't see the chip immediately, it's underneath a plastic insulating sheet).
You are going to need to unscrew the keyboard and remove the upper plastic casing which sourrounds the touchpad etc. Then remove the hard drive caddy (remove one screw and it'll slide out with encouragement). It can be a bit of a fiddly job and you'll probably end up unscrewing things you needn't of, but have patience and make a note of what screw came out of whch hole unless you've done this sort of thing before.
MAKE ABSOLUTELY SURE YOU'VE GOT THE RIGHT CHIP - you really won't get a second chance at this if you guess and get it wrong - shorting the wrong chip will result in one totally dead and deep fried mobo.
It took me about 15-20 attempts to short the security chip properly and blank it's contents. Sometimes the board wouldn't boot at all with the paperclip making contact so I had to remove it, waited until the Dell splash screen appeared and then started shorting the connectors. Some people seem to find success in removing the paperclip just before the 'administator password' screen pops up, but I just kept that sucker on there until it gave in and wiped itself.
Just for the record I didn't actually reach any sort of 'manufacturing mode'. I just suddenly got a standard bios type message screen stating that no bootable drives were found (because the HDD was disconnected) and then upon reboot it had cleared the password (which I double checked by entering the BIOS setup).
Fortunately for me the bios password had only been enforced on bootup and they hadn't locked the HDD down too! (which is good - that would of been a waste of 60Gb!!!)
The key is.. don't give up! Persistance is the watch word here. It probably won't work first time but stick at it - this method DOES work providing you do a bit of research and take your time.
I'd just like to thank all the useful contributors to this thread. I read it from start to finish yesterday and it took me about 2 hours last night to unlock the laptop (and thats only because it took me a little time to get the laptop stripped down and locate the security chip).
Thanks guys, hope you all have similar success. :)

I think I need a bit of help as I caun't get passed the BIOS admin password. I have a Latitude c640 (HT24LC04) and have tryed every single combination for jumping the pins (4/5,4/6), waiting 4-7 seconds before applying the clip, pressing the power button multiple times, nothing works.
The best i've got is the HS fan starting up while applying the clip then the screen going grey untill it finally shuts down.
I've been at this 2 hours solid with this damn paperclip and I swear if I see another one i'm going to flip.
I'm glad I only build Tower PCs for a living.

Hi Mate!,
Don't dispare, you will get there if you stick with it.
Lets assume you are looking at the security chip so that the writing on it reads left-right and isn't upside-down. The pins you want to target are the set which are the second in from the left. I tried other combinations of pins but these two were the magic set.
In my limited experience you want to be shorting these out as soon as you've powered the laptop up. The aim of the game is to get enough juice flowing through it long enough to wipe it's contents.
Keep at it - you'll succeed eventually!!

how to do to get an 610er running : open the laptop underside!! ca.4cm under the small Battery ,and under a Framepart you see the EEPROM is very difficult to find it is an 24lc04bi .
It has 8 pins the first 3 are not delaeted pin 4 is ground, you must shortcut pin 4 with pin 6.
First start the Computer, then when you have to tip in the password do the shortcut, when you shortcut the right one pins(4 and 6) the ventilator starts to run , hold the shortcut until the monitor show you, you are ready.
The HDD was stil in by the shortcut , and stil works fine , bevor I found out the right pins (4 and 6) I nearly shortcut everypin with the other. everything runs fine . excuse for bad english i´m still german

Hi all ,
I would like to offer my sincerest thanks to all those in the group for the info needed to unlock a newly acquired Latitude C600, it took a few tries with master password, exe before realising that my service tag was of the wrong type for the software, in the end it was a strip and hard reset of the board that finally cured it and now I am busy typing away on it sending this note of thanks.
So to all those who still have laptops locked, i did it and with a little effort the right info and the service manual you to can unlock your laptop.
Now all I need to do is reset my Service Tag so I can set a password, wheres that chap with the bootdisk?
Cheers and good luck
