To anyone who has short circuited a latitude D505, i would just like to ask at what time's did you use the paper clip. I have tired around 30 times at jumping the eeprom at diffirent periods of time and none as of yet have worked. In a pdf i got from a member of this forum it said to:

"Short circuit the 24c04 or 24c05 during booting and release when the cursor at the display flashes. If this donīt work, short direct after you pushed power and release when the cursor at the display flashes. If this donīt work at first time, try it again and again."

However, what ever i tried did not seem to work. In many cases i would conect the wire to short circuit the eeprom, in which case the Bios would load almost to the end, and then the computer would restart by itself, the bios would then load again. After loading a screen would be displayed saying:

Primary hard disk drive 0 not found
a cursor would then flash for a moment i would try releasing the wire here, but this did not work. And then shortly after that cursor would flash another line would be printed to the screen saying:

No bootable devices--strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility
and then a cursor would flash again, i also tried braking the circuit at this stage, but nothing has seemed to work.

Any help would be great.

Thanking you
driver

PS. Thanks to those who have already helped

Update: Never mind, my problem was that i was making the link with the paper clip but was not holding in the power button, instead i would just press it once. The secret for first timers is to make the link when laptop is off and then hold the power button in for at least 5 - 8 seconds.

I found a site with a sort of tutorial of how to short circuit the eeprom chip, it has a few pics which might point people in the right direction.
http://www.pcdoc.bz/service/free-info/dell-latitude-cpi.htm

I followed the steps but i have a CPx not a CPi and the chip doesnt seem to be in the same location, does anyone know where the eprom chip is on a CPx?
just point me in the right direction please!!! :(

Haha! I did it!!! the chip was where u said it was. I put the whole thing back together without the case, then turned it on its side and shorted the chip with one hand while holding the power with the other and it worked.

now when it boots it says its in manufacturer mode press Fn-x to return to normal mode, should i do that or just leave it alone?

Thanx everyone!! :bounce:

You can press FN-X together and reset the laptop, but you will not have a service tag installed on the EEProm and will be unable to set a password of your own until you do. Did you get the DST file for a Floppy diskette? A USB 2.0 Floppy and cable is what I use with the D models, and is the required DOS Bootable.

After removing the keyboard, you should see an aluminum heat sink with a copper ban running in an "L" shaped pattern. Remove the two small copper screws and pull up the heat sink. That should reveal the CPU daughter boad. Remove the 3 screws holding down the daughter board and gently pry it up with a small screwdriver. You will see several surface mounted IC chips. The one just right of center is the chip you want to short. You may need a work magnifying glass to see it. The rest of what to do is on this forum.

I know that everyone has already left posts in regards to passwords related to the bios but I haven't yet seen anyone talk about the laptop I have. A Dell Inspiron 9100 with service tag starting with GN2....41 and express service tag ending in 441.

My problem is the following, I cannot enter bios settings because when asked to hit F2 or F12 it behaves like if it is going to enter setup but instead goes into the nightmare we are dealing with. When I hit either of the keys mentioned above I get the " This computer System, #GN...41 - 595B, is protected by a password authentication system. You cannot access the data on this computer without the correct password" Like I said I know you guys have been dealing with this but none with Inspiron 9100. Will the model of the computer matter? I really need help with this and please " DON'T PUT LINKS THAT YOU NEED TO PAY TO GET THE SOLUTION" I noticed that some of the help giving out here are for sites that you have to pay $. Thank you guys !!!! really please help me ! Thanks!

Hi Paragon33
I tried somehow on my on to short the pins of eeprom on inspriron 600m but it didn't work. Maybe I do something wrong. Can you please send me instructions on the technique how to do it properly? email removed
Thanks

Update: Thank you again Paragon33 for the instructions
It worked for me shorting pins 3-5 couple of times untill I saw the manufacturing mode screen. Pins 3-6 looked like working (showing the MM screen), yet the psw was still there. For those that tried and it is not working the first time - advice - be persistent.
Also, whoever has Inspiron 600m - the bugger (24C04) is under the PCMCIA.

I removed the Bios battery and nothing happened, It is still asking me for the admin password. there are not jumpers on the board to reset anything. I also tried to press the power button for 5 minutes to see if that would reset the password and nothing happened. Does anyone have a clue of how to remove the admin password on a Dell Latitude D610??? Thank you :hotbounce

My stuff has worked on all models SO FAR and it is free. You might have a "treasure hunt" looking for the EEProm chip.
