Maybe we should get Julio's okay before we "dub" it official, eh? He might get a tad annoyed with us. :giddy: :knock:

01-22-2004, 10:02 AM
Yeah, that might be a good idea...

Anyways, I don't think we'll need to come up with a name right now anyways...
AFAIK SETI hasn't found much yet...

But one could allways be surprised... :)

Nice to know my memory isn't as bad as I thought...
(And it's bloody hard to find a place which sells quality upgrades too...!)

You'll also have a nice average time for each workunit then... But at least you'll rack up cpu time donated :)

Guys, is there a thread in here that explains the whole SETI@HOME/distributed computing thing? I understand the basics of how it works, but I've been giving it some consideration and I'd like to know what all it involves. Thanks in advance.

MrGaribaldi
01-23-2004, 11:27 AM
I don't think we've got such a thread on this forum...

It goes a bit above what we concentrate on imo, but it's an interesting topic...

I suggest you that you google around a bit, and check out this (http://distributed.net/) site...
It's what got me started on DC in the first place...

The team page is updated a few times a day, sometimes under heavy traffic only once a day. Your personal statistics are updated a little more often & can been seen at -> http://setiathome2.ssl.berkeley.edu/fcgi-bin/fcgi?email=youremail%40provider&cmd=user_stats_new

Change youremail%40provider with your Email ( do not replace %40 with @, it will not work ) & you'll see your own results. :)

PS. Or simply go there & enter your Email at the bottom -> http://setiathome2.ssl.berkeley.edu/account_area.html

Im not really concerned about my personal stats I was just wondering why my results werent being updated.PS how come nobody welcomed me when I joined. And now that my stats are being updated I guess I will put good puter back on the team

I could've sworn I greated you into the team. I think those aliens deleted my post so that there's some discord in the team lowering the chances to find them.:suspiciou

Or maybe it just slipped my mind.;)

Anyways Welcome to the Team Novicegamer.:D

I just got 2nd CPU for my 2nd computer, now I have dual-P3 and dual-Celeron crunching Seti. I'll pass MrG and one year of CPU time shortly :approve:

Didou
02-04-2004, 08:48 AM
Well Huzzah to that Mic. :)

( run MrG, RUN !!! ;) )

We've also passed 11K results ( keep 'em coming ) & 9 years of computing time.

Congrats to all.

And to think that I'm only crunching on an AthlonXP 2500+ Barton with you not able to keep up so far... :)

If you can't overtake me now when using 4 cpu's and I only use 1 cpu....

Too bad I'm too broke to build another system atm... :(

Hey guys. My email address has changed, and I no longer have the one I signed up with. I've also lost the password. Would it be possible for somebody to kick me out of the account so I can re-join?

Didou
02-12-2004, 07:08 AM
We can kick you out of the team but your account is still lost. You will have to create a new account & start at 0. Is that what you want ?

Spike
02-12-2004, 07:27 AM
lol. yip. That is exactly what I want. Thankyou. I hadn't done much before I lost my password and email anyway. An unexpected reinstall lost me the text file it was in.

I'm a bit wiser these days. data stays on a seperate partition :)

Thanks

Didou
02-12-2004, 07:41 AM
I'll remove you from the team later but you can allready join again with your new account, no problems there.:)

Didou
02-12-2004, 02:49 PM
BTW are you sure you want me to remove you ? That means taking out 11 WU from the team total.;)

Spike
02-12-2004, 03:05 PM
well, I would appreciate it. I would like to add myself in as spike again. Two spikes would make a febnce, and we wouldn't want that! lol

I'll set the computer working with my broadband connection overnight. I'll bring back those 11 units in no time!

Didou
02-12-2004, 03:16 PM
Done.

Oh & BTW...

12K UNITS !!! :D

Spike
02-12-2004, 03:30 PM
OK, that's INSANE!!! I've just created a new account. I've been credited with 1 WU's! I guess I used my most current details at the time (always a good idea!) I was sure I used a different email. ah well. sorry for any inconvenience. I'll rejoin now. (BTW, the password sending form told me no such user when I asked for this address earlier!lol)

OK, 12K, WELL DONE GUYS!

EDIT: Hold on... maybe I was right. the join link tells me it doesn't have my details.

EDIT 2: OK, got it now! lol

MrGaribaldi
02-13-2004, 01:03 PM
Nice, the team is growing and so are our results :)

Keep up the good work people!

Didou
02-14-2004, 11:10 AM
Well we're up to 9.8 years of computing time. Keep those CPUs hot.

PS. Is it me or does this thread have a rating ??? ( 5 starts at that )

Didou
02-14-2004, 02:20 PM
Uh Spike are you using the CLI version ( Command Line Interface ) ? It seems you're getting long average times for your machine.

You should be way under 4 hours average.

Spike
02-14-2004, 07:57 PM
nope. lol. I haven't found it yet, so I'm using the GUI.

Seems a little quicker than it was though, now I'm using a 2400+ Athlon.

Where can I get hold of the CLI version?

Didou
02-14-2004, 08:21 PM
SETI@Home FAQ @ Anandtech (http://www.anandtech.com/guides/viewfaq.html?i=68)

It also explains how to use it with SETIDriver ( great utility ). Using the CLI can reduce WU times up to 50%.

Spike
02-14-2004, 08:55 PM
Brilliant. Thanks. I've got the CLI running now with seti driver and seti spy.

I have acctually often wondered just what the point of that memory/cpu hogging graph in the gui version is for. It's not like most of us really understand it anyway, and we sure as heck don't sit here watching it!

WU processing time has drastically decreased. Thankyou

Didou
02-15-2004, 06:07 AM
Yeah that will certainly help quite a lot. You should be under 4 hours per WU now.:grinthumb

MrGaribaldi
02-15-2004, 11:03 AM
Hmm... Maybe that's what I need to do to stay ahead of Mict... *click&read*

:D

Didou
02-15-2004, 01:58 PM
Oh please do tell me you weren't using the GUI version.:dead:

LNCPapa
02-15-2004, 06:02 PM
I'm using the GUI version on my Macs - but I Command+H it to hide - then the gui seems to only update when I tell it to show - takes a sec to actually update as well. Also, the GUI version is SMP aware - because it usually uses around 180-190% of my CPU time in top.

Spike
02-16-2004, 03:54 AM
Has anybody else had trouble connesting to the server to send results and DL WU's over last night?

Didou
02-16-2004, 06:01 AM
Well this morning when uploading two WUs, one failed but the other one got uploaded fine. SETI servers are under huge loads so they might have misses from time to time.

MrGaribaldi
02-16-2004, 06:02 AM
Yes...

Quite annoyingly it happened right after I switched to CLI...

Oh, and Didou, yes I was using the GUI version...
I really like to be able to check how many units I've crunched without loading up the seti page...
Oh, and the only reduction in time I've seen so far is about 20 min, so I'm thinking about switching back...

Didou
02-16-2004, 06:11 AM
Well let it run for a while, & see after a few units how much your average time has gone down.

As far as knowing the total amount of units, it's not like you upload 1K units every day ya bum.:D

& the caching option alone should make you wanna keep the CLI + SETIDriver combo.;)

No, but since I'm not at my computer all the time unlike others *cough* *cough* ;), it's nice to be updated through the GUI instead of having to load a bloody browser...

And it still hasn't given me much of a speed increase...
It's not like it'll increase the speed with which it crunces when it "feels at home" on my pc either...

That is the one reason it's not gone allready. Now at least it has 10 units to work with if their server decides to take a break like yesterday :)

I'll just pretend you didn't take a stab at me. Ah what the heck...

/me slaps MrG like the silly duck that he is...

I'm at work most of the day so I only look at hte progress of my current WU which is a pain in Linux ( you have to open the state.sah file & look at the line "prog=" ).

& as for not seeing a speed increase, you are truely the first person to not notice one. Maybe if you stopped encoding those DivX files in the background, you would notice it.;)

Mayhap it has something todo that it was allways running minimized to tray without using it as a screensaver? That way the GUI isn't in use any more than that of Seti Driver, with the exception of when I wanted to check my progress...

Didou
02-18-2004, 12:31 PM
Well I keep it running minimised at all times, that doesn't stop it from taking up 100% of the CPU cycles. BTW make sure you aren't running both the screen saver & the CLI version at the same time.:p

On another note...

We now have reached 10 years of computing time. Thx to all for contributing to this common effort ( especially Papeh with his computer parc at home hehe ).

Papeh has also reached 4K units so another reason to congratulate him.

PS. I know another reason to congratulate Papeh but I won't tell.;)

Here's a milestone for ya - 2 hour work unit anyone? (http://www.techspot.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=217)

I'll try to catch it when it's under 2 hours.

BTW the longest I've seen a WU finish on this machine was under 3 hours, because I was gaming right in the middle of when SETI was on. It's not that I have small WUs ;)

Didou
02-24-2004, 03:14 AM
I'd like to see it when it's at 99%.;)

The time-left estimation increases with time. Cheater !!!:p

lol It finished at 2:11. And I know it increases with time - I started a new WU this morning and the estimation was 1:11

Maybe I'll post my SETI.csv log file?

Spike

OK, is it me, or is the team effort dwindling!?

I just updated the team stats on my SETI Spy, a couple of hours ago. Total WU's dropped from 109 to 97, and team CPU's dropped from 21 - 18!!

C'mon guys!!!

Didou
02-25-2004, 01:50 AM
I have no evidence backing me up but I still wanna call MrG a SLACKER !!! ;)

I wonder if I can get a few of the Xeons at work to crunch without anyone noticing.:D

MrGaribaldi
02-25-2004, 06:55 AM
Hehehe...
You are quite correct in that Didou. I turn seti off when I play games, and sometimes I forget to restart it after I'm finished playing....!

I've been wondering if I should try to get some cpu time from my university, but I'm not sure how popular that'd be, since it'd take over cpu time used by authorized mathematical programs........

As for the team, just because we've dropped down with 12WU's now doesn't mean it's going to stay that way... Maybe more people experienced a reboot during the night like me... Or maybe they've been needing the cpu time for something else for a little while...

novicegamer
02-25-2004, 03:08 PM
I took one unit off line for repairs and havent botherd to reconect .But I have it working on cancer trying to get my hours total down

Mr Spike, she can't take much more of this !!! She's about to blow !!! ;)

It seems a lot of people have come back on board after some time of hiatus. Welcome back all.

& if anyone else wants to join, get yer fanny on the train !!!
