Old ATX mobo with 'sleep' connector, startup problem!

I'm trying to 'minimal boot' an old ATX mobo (out of case) using ATX psu, pentium II cpu, 1 stick of memory, monitor (on-board vga), speaker (on-board), leads from mobo... power ON/OFF push-switch, sleep push-switch, power LED.

When I turn the power on, the psu FAN cracks up, power LED blinks continually, no POST bleeps and no video signal to monitor.

Have tried resetting CMOS and 'jumped' sleep pins but can't get it to work... HELP!!!

It being that old, you need to replace the mobo-battery first, otherwise it won't give a peep (litterally). Be careful not to break any supports for that battery!
