Java allows you to play online games, chat with people around the world, calculate your mortgage interest, and view images in 3D. These applications, written in the Java programming language and access from your browse, are called "applets". Corporations also use Java applets for intranet applications and other e-business solutions.

Java updates are not rolling updates. Meaning you must manually uninstall all older versions with add/remove programs.

I find the simplest way is to go to control panel and double click the Java Icon, click the update tab and click the update now button. Then, once the update has been downloaded and installed, go to add remove programmes and uninstall all older versions of Java.
