i just bought a new Intel Pentium 4 3.0E Prescott 3.0GHz 1MB L2 Cache Socket 478 processor, and it runs at idle temp 65-67C, under load it hits around 74C maybe more, i use an A-Bit Intel ICH5R Socket 478 motherboard and my heatsink/fan cooling is TR2TT TR2-M12 80mm Ball CPU Cooler so im wondering what i could possibly do to fix this heat problem before my system melts. any emails, comments would be helpful with real help answers thank you.

PS i checked the Arctic Silver i placed and it is right, i also checked the heatsink position and seems right, im not sure what else it could be but its cooking my whole system and causes me to lag heavily in game....

try touching the heatsink if its hot that means that you should remount your heatsink if that dosnt work try another heatsink that fitsin a socket 478 (if you have one lying around) also if the heatsink isnt hot it could be a temp sensor on your mother board that is fualty

touched heatsink finger singed beyond recognition.....

further checked to see if it was mounted right, and it fits just fine, the heatsink/fan i got was the one recommended at www.newegg.com so i bought it with the processor, also im not sure if its the motherboard reading wrong because i touch the side of the tower even and its burning hot and so is my motherboard, video card, power supply.... any more ideas would help please, thanks for the help so far.

did you physicaly remove the acctual heatsink or jusst gave it a 360 inspection?? also if you applied to much thermal paste it acts like a inuslator instead of a condoctor.

Slappydotcom
11-17-2007, 10:38 PM
used one BB sized drop of Arctic Silver, and not a 360 inspection, three times today ive removed it and turned it to see which way fit best

also maybe the fan on your heatsink isnt spining at full speed check your system bios.

Slappydotcom
11-17-2007, 10:44 PM
im a new pc builder, so bare with me, but when i go to BIOS i check fan speeds and it reads 2600 roughly on CPU fan, is that ok ? and also when i go to alter speed percentage it tells me 60,70,80, 90%'s ... so can you tell me step by step what to do please.

Computer~freak~
11-17-2007, 10:47 PM
well im not to fimiliar with your bios as almost every bios is a bit diffrent but try making your fan spin at 100% if you can then check the temp also watprogram or item are you using to check your temp??

Slappydotcom
11-17-2007, 10:49 PM
well everytime i logon to my pc i go to bios and check the temps in there... plus while on the desktop i use Speedfan 2.48, to check the temps, and the max percent i can set my fan speed thing to is 90%... not sure what it is, lemme go see my bios then ill come back with details on exact word usage and numbers.

in the mean time tell me, does the FSB of the motherboard and CPU matter alot if theyre different ?

Computer~freak~
11-17-2007, 10:53 PM
well the motherboard should be compatible with the fbs of your processor like my mother board supports fbs of 800/1066/1333 like that your processor has a fbs of 800 so some were on the box of your motherboard there should be a part that says its compatile fbs 's

i did some research on your mother board and i fouind out that your motherboard supports 800 fbs so your in the clear but did u get any succes on puting your fan speed to 100 or 90%

Slappydotcom
11-17-2007, 11:01 PM
thanks for finding that out for me i feel slightly better now(no sarcasm, just real thanks) but um, no i set it to 90% speed... and when i hit F10 to save and exit i hit Y then enter and nothing screen stays frozen as if i cant exit anymore... ? any suggestions ?

Computer~freak~
11-17-2007, 11:02 PM
try pressing the restart button theres no harm in that if it didnt save your settings it will just revert bak to your previous ones

Slappydotcom
11-17-2007, 11:11 PM
ok fan set to 90% speed increase, and hit restart apparently it stayed saved...

but to a loss, my cpu still runs 66C idle, underload tops at 78C... it seems close to a burn out.. so im hoping you might have more advice ?

Computer~freak~
11-17-2007, 11:13 PM
well im just as puzzeld as your

Computer~freak~
11-17-2007, 11:14 PM
i thought of more stuff ill post it in a sec

Slappydotcom
11-17-2007, 11:14 PM
i mean everything seems fine to me, apparently all my parts match fine, all wires securely fastened right, would the power supply affect my cpu temp at all ? cause when i notice the temp rise on the cpu the whole pc starts to heat up bad...

Computer~freak~
11-17-2007, 11:17 PM
try to turn off "smart fan" in your bios it will make all tour fans that are controlled by the bios run at 100%

(theres a second page now if you dont see it)

Slappydotcom
11-17-2007, 11:18 PM
sorry for the constant posts but where would i find smart fan ?

Computer~freak~
11-17-2007, 11:20 PM
in your bios
PS. dont worry about the constant posts you are suppose to ask questions in forums

Slappydotcom
11-17-2007, 11:38 PM
ok well i searched for the "Smart Fan" option with no luck, i could not find that option aywhere in my bios and also i set cpu fan speed to 90% it also asks me under it a target temp to put and i put 41C... to maybe force my pc to try and lower the temp but still nothing...

Computer~freak~
11-17-2007, 11:39 PM
hmm bumerr what is your house's room temp??

Slappydotcom
11-17-2007, 11:41 PM
um, 72? around there.

Computer~freak~
11-18-2007, 12:06 AM
wats that in celcius like 30??

Slappydotcom
11-18-2007, 12:11 AM
roughly yes, does the house temp make a huge difference ?

Computer~freak~
11-18-2007, 12:13 AM
well the house temp is the temp of the air the computer fans take in and then then thats the air the heatsink uses to cool down the cpu it only matter a litle

Slappydotcom
11-18-2007, 12:14 AM
so anything else you can tell me it might be ? im at such a huge loss...

Computer~freak~
11-18-2007, 12:20 AM
giv me a sec to think

Computer~freak~
11-18-2007, 12:29 AM
umm all i can think of is if you try to take off the heatsink and clean off the thermalpastete only if u have more and then after take the processot out of its socket and chek if any pins are bent that can cause the problem also if you have some theramale paste on the socket whipe it

Computer~freak~
11-18-2007, 12:40 AM
if u have thermalpaste on the socket wipe it off gently with a q tip

Computer~freak~
11-18-2007, 12:48 AM
also wat power supply are u usin

Slappydotcom
11-18-2007, 12:54 AM
my PS is a Logisys ATX 20/24 pin, 480w

Computer~freak~
11-18-2007, 12:56 AM
ok ur psu is good did u try what i metioned above??

Slappydotcom
11-18-2007, 12:57 AM
not yet, i will in a bit im late for a dinner date with my girlfriend, ill message back asap ok, thanks so far for the help, well continue this asap. have a good night.

*edit* ANYONE ELSE GOT ANY INFO TO ADD? i could really use the help, before my cpu burns.. thanks.

Computer~freak~
11-18-2007, 11:20 PM
well did you do what i suggested???? you never posted back as you said

Slappydotcom
11-18-2007, 11:22 PM
i removed the heatsink/fan and checked it all out, was good. then i checked all wires moved them away from fans to make airflow good. made sure all parts were fastened in right, reapplied new BB size of Arctic Silver, and still only dropped 3-5C in temp... runs 61-64C idle, and 70-75C under load

Computer~freak~
11-18-2007, 11:27 PM
well i heard 3.00ghz p4 can run at 60c idle normaly then there are some people who have theres at 40c-50c so i donno but if i were you i would get a new heatsink the one you purchased looks likeit lacks cooling power i would suggest somthing like this:
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1800602&CatId=795

Slappydotcom
11-18-2007, 11:31 PM
hmmm, maybe your right and it is my heatsink, but then again, why wouldnt the one i have do its job, it was recommended for my cpu on newegg.com, not that im questioning your point of view, just considering my options, the fan you linked me is quite expensive, and this new system has left me pennyless

Computer~freak~
11-18-2007, 11:34 PM
well that is in canadian dollars and everthing just happens to still be cheaper were u live lol but i found another one ill send to u but do u hapen to live close to a frys eletronics??

Computer~freak~
11-18-2007, 11:45 PM
the one u have may also be a defect you should try sanding down the bottom of the heatsink ive dont that before and it lowerd my temps

Slappydotcom
11-18-2007, 11:54 PM
well i live in california, and no theres no frys near me.. =s

Computer~freak~
11-18-2007, 11:56 PM
lol anyways u should do what i suggested above its worked for me sand the bottome of the heatsink down in circular motions

Computer~freak~
11-19-2007, 12:00 AM
also u if u do sanddown the bottom of ur heatsink use a oil or water while sanding it

Slappydotcom
11-19-2007, 12:06 AM
hmm sand down, i would be kinda nervous to do so. what if i return it and buy a better one ? lol

Computer~freak~
11-19-2007, 12:07 AM
lol well u can search the web many people do it they call it (laping) they say it lowers there temp i have personaly did it myself to one of my heatsinks
*EDIT* but its your call if u wanna do it

Slappydotcom
11-19-2007, 12:26 AM
any special amount of heatsink that needs to be sanded off or what type of motion do i do exactly? any tutorials on how to do it or detailed instructions? just so i get it right

Computer~freak~
11-19-2007, 12:30 AM
(you dont have to use every single sandpaper they mention u can skip a few types) http://www.overclockersclub.com/guides/lapping/

Slappydotcom
11-19-2007, 12:55 AM
ill try this asap, and ill post once done, if you got any more info feel free to post it and ill keep checking back to see updates ok, ill post once i try lapping my heatsink

*edit* im surprise only you have answered =s from what i hear the cpu i got is widely used, also do you know if its meant to play games, or just for regular use ?

Computer~freak~
11-19-2007, 12:59 AM
ok ill chek if i can get anyore info
*edit* well i used to have the exact same cpu as you they are half decent but i sugest u have at least 2 gb's of memory to accompany the cpu and they go good with radeon X1650's and with those two things you will find yourself a half decent computer
