Performance issues

Ok i'm relatively new to this stuff but I have been having alot of trouble with my pc's fps in games like CSS and BF2. Both games run pretty smoothly on my laptop which is considerably weaker than my pc, except for the graphics card. I have been considering whether it would be a good idea to upgrade but I need to know what to buy, my budget is around 200 dollars. I have the following info on my pc, just tell me if you need to know more.

Try upgrading to XP, SP2 first... or even Vista SP1

NVIDIA GeForce 6600 | NVIDIA GeForce 6600 | RDPDD Chained DD | RDP Encoder Mirror Driver no most new games will work with this like Battelfield 2442 or whatever that's called. Also you have a Vista supported card as well.

Ok i'll try out the tip with xp, and thanks for the info on video card, i'll reply later to see if it helped my fps

A 6600 would work with games just not good. You would be able to play the latest games on low settings and they would just seem crappy to you. That motherboard supports PCI-E. You could upgrade to a 8800GTS 320MB (G80 Version tho) for only 144$(114$ after mail in rebate) on newegg. It would be A HUUGGGEEE perfromance upgrade. 500% better than your card. You would need windows vista tho if you want its DX10 abilities.
