External Hard drives

Hi all, I normally carry out a back up from my PC to an EXT HDD every 2 weeks but I am still worried about losing everything in case this one breaks down. I have now bought a new one but is it ok to have 2 Ext HDD going together on my PC, because I want to copy certain material from my existing Ext HDD to my new one as well as a complete backup. Will this cause a prob or damage my PC in any way? thanks for any help.
