Sorry I for got about the pic. my dad turned off the net and i didnot have this page up still so i just went by with what i rembered.
I click on the drivers (both of them) and its flat out says driver is missing or corrupted... i rebooted my comp and when i get back to device manager it said that it had installed like 10 new audio devices. they say stuff like kernel audio and such. each time I uninstall something it keeps reappearing back into the device manager. so its still possible to make the pic because nothing is seeming to be pernament? |

And as an fyi, i think there's a good chance to get this solved if we work together like this and make sure we understand each other. (helped me realize the change of instructions needed.) Probably not new instructions till tomorrow tho. But let me explain what what/why you're seeing Open Device Manager and change the View to Display by Connection and you'll see something like pic attached to this post (Download pic and then you can view pic) - Note the View Menu also shows Device by Connection is indicated - Note the 2 sound devices that appear on my sample computer: The Hi Def Audio device is toward the bottom in the pic and the SoundMax HD Audio for that computer is below it If you right click a device then Uninstall it, it WILL disappear (at least for the moment!) but DO NOT REBOOT YET! - First rt click and uninstall the sound card . For the moment it disppears, right? Do NOT reboot. - Next, right click the High Def Audio device and uninstall it. For the moment it also disappears, right? Do NOT reboot Cause when you reboot, Windows re-detects hardware connected devices on boot (Note hardware detection doesn't need drivers. Your sound hardware gets detected whether the driver exists or not!). Once redetected, the device reappears and of course says no drivers So now you can reboot and use your computer while i going double check some things and get back to you tomorrow! |

No worries if those yellow icons appear in Device mgr. it means an error but we know we're working on it

if cheking devmgr still shows not working can't give any more detail now. back later. but see if you can't use these two tools to create reports so i can see it also
MyUninstaller from nirsoft. will show me all your Add/Remove entries. Start and select items then save in a text file so i can see Unknown Devices to File->Save and it tells me all the hardware devices on your computer. This is what Windows Installer uses to match up device and driver. |

i understand used before. will be a case of
1) i find dell posted wrong driver OR 2) it won't work EVER until we get all the misc Windows details "ducks lined up correctly" then it'll be happy to work |

and fyi. if it comes to it. i can tell you what to do to create a trace file of what the Windows Installer is doing, what it's finding and what it's looking for. but do that if we get that point. so i still beleive is still a matter of windows data screwed up and will find it

1. When you downloaded from Dell, you're prompted to Run or Save ===> Did you click Run? (Windows downloads then tries doin install automatically) ===> Did you click Save? (Windows saves file to your hard drive. You then click it yourself to open the file and start the install) 2. (you can also refer to attached pic) Rt click My Computer->Properties->Hardware. Click Driver Signing ====> Is it set to Warn? (or Ignore or Block?) ====> Is it set to Make this action system default? |

And an fyi for future reference(I'm tempted to have the OP just update to SP3 which theoretically should resolve one of the two device drivers, the one for HI Def Audio controller... ==> But that's theory. and that's only one driver ==> But can be helpful if first possible understand Audio controller/driver issue even if it is currently occuring in SP2) |

Yes I'm following thread too, for info. So far the info is of high caliber
![]() Note: sometimes when I get computers with possible device driver problem, I just remove the PCI bridge, and re-install all the drivers (not exactly ideal, but it has worked ) |

well, here's another tidbit.. or at least something i just learned in the process today. Don't know if you knew this or not but... I always thought the Dell Download page for Dell computer models list provided any recent past versions along with the current version. (i certainly see multiple versions listed for different things for different models) The Inspiron 1501 download page only provides one Audio driver. But apparently while the Inspiron 1501 download page only points to v5.10.0.5515_RC22-WHQL, A11 released 12/02/07 There was a prior release v.5.10.0.5143, A07 released 11/02/06 the only documented differences i found (they didn't indicate any bug list fixes in new version) but only - new version is WHQL tested - new version supports stereo mixer functionality |
