After 10 years playing PC games (including nearly every FPS) I can honestly say that FarCry is the best gaming experience I have had to date. It is probably the only game that I will play through again due to the way you can tackle levels in differing ways. Stunning graphics and amazingly fluid gameplay..... gets my vote Bet Valve are a tad nervous at the moment!

Far Cry Tweaking

I would advise people when running Far Cry to do a bit of PC resource tweaking f they are comfortable with it.
It needs every bit of spare resource available.
Disable AA, you dont really need this because of the huge outdoor scenes, if enabled the card has to perform a huge amount of sampling.
Shadows set to medium or High.

I read peoples posts saying that they have huge slow downs and when you read their sig, some machines are top of the range.

I personally run the game at 1280x1024, with 8x AF. Everything on very high, water on ultra high. Full sound mixing and get about 25 to 80 frames per second!

Dont know whether people know this or not, but i disable alot of options in the msconfig file in the startup tab. 3/4 of the stuff in their doesnt need to be running in the background.

All ATI owners should install Catalyst 4.3's, they have a good shader boost.

To get the engine running at it's best you do need to do a bit of tweaking, when all said and done, this is the most technologically advanced engine to date.

The best advise i can give to people is make sure you have the latest drivers for everything, including your motherboard.

I didn't have any problems from the start with Far Cry. I've seen people talking about issues with slow performance in Battlefield Vietnam also and I don't have any problems with it either.

Athlon XP 2800+
1GB Crucial 3200 Mem
Connect 3D Ati 9800Pro 128mb
Audigy 2
Leadtek K7NCR18 Pro Mobo (Nforce 2)

I've played through 18 levels of the game (On the 19th "Dam") on the above set up with no noticable slowdown or frame drop at all.
Everything is set to Very High at 1024 x 768 with the water set to Ultra High. Low FSAA. Running on average at 45-50fps. Plenty fast enough.

And if anyone can help me through the Dam level I'd be obliged. Seriously hard. I mean seriously.

Best game I've played since Zelda on the SNES.

Far Cry is starting to show the potential of some people's systems. My bro has a a.4GHz Thunderbird with a KT266A mobo and a ATI 8500LE and he can barely run the game at 800x600 at low settings. I as glad my system can run it. Only slowed down once so far.

Upgrading is gonna be needed for DOOM3 and Half Life 2 for sure. I was thinking about getting a 9800 and softmodding it to a 9800Pro for around $140. Or I can get a 9800 Pro for $210. Pretty cheap prices

I found out that V44.65 Nvidia drivers to be the best newer drivers for a GF3 ti500. I get around 9000 points in 3dmark2001SE.

you gotta give CryTek and UBI credit (more so CryTek) theyve managed to release perhaps the most complex and demanding game to date and for the most part if this thread is anything to go by, they have over 90% stability on peoples PC's, i'd expect it to have major issues with it coming from a not so well known company (CryTek).

But anyway, all you people who have PC's which reach the games minimum but preferably the recommended spec and still experience slowdowns, do everything suggested in previous posts, dont have AA on etc etc If you still get the dreaded stuttering have a look in the Far Cry official forums (http://www.farcry-thegame.com , i think) if its a major problem im pretty certain there will be a sticky post in the technical support area of the forum, if that still doesnt work, and youve tried the 1.1 patch (which doesnt mention anything about fixing low FPS problems) then your gonna have to wait to see if the v1.2 patch fixes the problem, either that or seriously sort your PC out, rid it of applications you dont want, delete any unwanted programs, clear up as much free hard drive space as possible, then defrag, then go into Start - Run and type "msconfig" click on the "Startup" tab at the end and untick any programs you dont need, if your unsure what something is type in the file into Google and see what it comes up with, there should be at least 1 you can untick.

Far Cry is a VERY RAM dependant game, all those textures require a hell of a lot of memory, so if possible, as RAM is so cheap nowadays try to get 512mb of the stuff, 1gb if possible, its the cheapest way to upgrade your PC and its deffinately a noticeable performance gain.

The fastest way i always find to drastcially replenish your PC to its former youth is to reformat, if your PC hasnt been formatted in at least 6months, maybe getting Far Cry to work will get you to do it, as long as you have all your appz on disk you can get it down to a fine art, i can now format and restore all 80gb of stuff onto my HDD in under 3 hours, he he.

most of those thigns are free and pretty quick to do, but hell, dont live a lie, if your running a Celeron 1gig with 256mb of RAM and a GeForce 4 Ti4200 and your wondering why Far Cry doesnt run too well, maybe now is a time to upgrade, if your planning on playing Half Life 2 / DOom 3 in the near future your gonna have to do it anyway, and with the arrival of mainstream 64-bit CPU's now is as good a time as any to upgrade.

hell yes

I can't wait to get this one either, especially now that people tell me the demo isn't anything compared to the full game. It's one of those experiences where you know you're playing something that sets a new standard, gives you a glimpse of how complete and convincing game worlds are becoming. Has anyone else spent hours knocking a crate into the water and shooting it to make it roll over, or getting barrels/gas canisters to roll down stairs just to test out the physics. I used a grenade to fling one merc from the top of the stairs in the demo's jungle section down to the beach...hilarious! Physics has never been so sexy.

Correct Steg but from roadmaps and other information given out by AMD the 754 platform will be kept for some time. Athlon (32bit) XPs with Integrated memory controllers should be coming out for 754 platform and they will continue with a range of 754 Athlon 64s for quite sometime after the 940 platform has vanished for good. The best plan is to wait it out for 939 but if you buy 754 now your not going to find your self out of upgrade options as soon as you might think.

Socket-940 will not fade away, it is & will always be the socket for the Opteron & the Athlon64-FX is nothing more then a rebadged Opteron right now.

If you buy a board for an Athlon64-FX with a Socket-940 interface, you'll have a board that will also work with 1xx Opterons so all the new Opteron releases will work on it.

I even think Opteron 1xx chips are selling for cheaper then Athlon64-FX chip, at the same speed.

Awesome..

I challenge ANYONE to think of another Pc game including HL-1 (which was about as intense as my granny sewing) that can literally have you ****ing your pants when you're standing in the darkness of some tomb like cavern with only 2 mags left and all you can hear is that growling getting closer and closer! I have the FX5900 and this game is lush! Who gives a rats about HL-2 or D3 when they are not even anywhere NEAR being finshed.
For anyone who knocks this game that "HAS DECENT HARDWARE" (not geoforce mx anything) tell me the last game that was better. This game will get even better with time and mods, that is a fact. By the way - Can anyone beat this game without the cheats?...lol

Andrew.

Um, well Half Life 2 is prolly finished now and i suspect Doom 3 will be nearing completion, the day the game is complete isnt the day the game comes out in the shops you know, when the game is complete it has to undergo vigerous debugging and testing, then graded in every country its released for use with different age groups, then it has to be shipped amongst over things, its prolly a month after the game is finished before it is released in stores.

I can think of a few games other than HL1 which i thought were as consuming as Far Cry;

First one, Mafia, superb storyline, superb depth to the game, it made me almost put a severed horse head in my parents bed. Superb game

Second one is MOHAA and CoD, more specifically the Omaha beach landing mission in MOHAA and the Stalingrad landings in CoD, superb set pieces (if a bit distasteful) made you really feel apart of the game.

Third one, the original Deus-Ex (thought IW was a bit bland) Really gets you thinking, great game.

4th, Max Payne (1 & 2, more so 2) really stylish game, smooth as a babies **** and overwhelmingly cool in the purest form of the word "Cool"

Finally, Doom (Original flavour) groundbreaking game, absolutely blew me away back in 1993 (damn is it that old) scared the living s**t out of me too, storyline lacked a bit, but who cares, it was in a different league for many years after its released, Duke Nukem 3D came close for me when that came out in 1995, i loved that game.

So, with rehards to r1_forever's challenge, i think vie found a few games which are good, other than Far Cry.

And yes, i did complete it without the cheats, but if you do want to cheat, try the trainer, download it here;

Just FYI, new Forceware drivers 56.72 fix some FarCry graphical problems...might wanna check it out...

I know I have some mad glitches that I hope this fixes, but my guess is I will have to wait for Ubisoft to patch again.

Reply To DoM

I have to agree with you DoM on your choice of games. You even picked the 2 levels of MoH and CoD that I loved. Max Payne 2 I didnt think was all that good due to the character size of the enemy, they seemed small is all I can say to explain it. I would have like another weapon in Far Cry like an M-60 / chain gun option to carry, but my favorite is the Shotgun or the Sniper! What is it about Sniping someone accross a valley that is so satisfying. My phsycologist says I should try playing MYST to expel these evil tendencies...so I sniped him yesterday!

single player vs multiplayer

game is great, but for some reason it runs flawlessly in single player but chops up on multiplayer. The multiplayer will start great but after 5 or 10 minutes it starts consistently chopping, regardless of if im looking at a wall or a base full of players. As soon as I disconnect, the single player still runs fine. Not quite sure what is going on. Also the rockets are pretty overbalanced, not necessarily the 4 shot rocket launcher, but the secondary fire mode of one of the guns where you get 5 rockets before reloading, you can completely dominate the map with that one gun. All in all tho, definetly worth the purchase especially if you have friends in a clan to play it with. What a great time it has been for FPS's lately, UT2004, farcry, still playing planetside here n there.... good times with good titles on the horizon as well

Okay, i retract my previous statement ** Far Cry Rocks **, don't know about it being the best fps of all time, but certainly the scariest game I can remember playing. Much better than the demo.

Finally got it a couple days ago, but only played it for around 45 minutes. I ran it with all the settings turned up as high as they went, at 1280x1024, and it ran very well, I think in one huge, intense firefight a frame or two may have been skipped, but I don't mind because the game looks so awesome

And as for it being RAM-dependent, that's probably right since I recently added 1GB of DDR333 to this machine, which makes it have a total of 1.5GB, both channels at 333.

Writing about the game makes me want to play it...so yeah, I'm off.

Hi,
As a new member I am not sure if this has been debated.

I have FAR CRY Demo and will shortly be buying the full version. However in the DEMO I find the aiming cross is invisible on a light background. I have overcome this problem like this:-

Obtain a small piece of semi flexible clear plastic. (I have used a piece of the sealing plastic from a finger plaster cut to size )
Cut it to about 2cm square and draw a small circle with a wax pencil that is a size that fits into the the inside of the aiming X
Now draw a cross within the circle.

When the X is on the screen moisten the other side of the plastic and align on the screen so that the circle is centered within the aiming X. The moisture will hold it in place.

I have a 19in flat screen Monitor and there is no static on it. A CRT Monitor does have static and the plastic would stay in place without the moisture.

The thickness of the Flat Screen surface is very thin so there is no paralex to worry about. But a CRT monitor has a glass thickness of about 1.5 cm so you need to align the plastic in line with your eye view of the Aiming Cross.

It is very effective and you can always see the aiming X no matter what the background is.

I dont know if the full version has this problem.

Cheers
Ajax-Alan
