Is/was AVG Disaster?

hello,

i was using my computer Window XP and my AVG detected a virus (trojan horse......cant remember). I said to myself, "ok, no problem" and sent it to the vault. I then scanned the computer for anymore viruses, no threat found.
All of the sudden, a red icon with an "X" on the bottem right hand corner pops up a mesage saying my computer may potentially have a virus.
i scan my computer again with AVG and get the same result.
The constant pop ups from the icon drove me insane, so i looked for some informations online.
one advice was to use "safe mode" and then do a scan.
i tried the safe mode, and i did the scanning....and my computer found 11 threats.
i "healed them" and the AVG asked to restart the computer.
so yes, i reset the computer. And the disaster gets worse.
As the computer boots up and shows the "welcome" screen, it logs me off.

now i have a computer which is not only infected, but trash

are there any advice out there?

Try booting to Safe Mode (or Last Known Good Configuration) and then uninstall AVG
You can find these modes by pressing F8 before Windows starts

Also if you do get Windows running, and also successfully uninstall AVG, run the removal tool
Here is the 32Bit version (most users): http://www.avg.com/filedir/util/avg_...avgremover.exe
Here is the 64Bit version: http://www.avg.com/filedir/util/avg_...removerx64.exe

Basically, just like Norton, AVG can corrupt under Virus infection (and isn't good anyway IMO)

Install Avira free AntiVirus instead

Then have a look at:

Hey gamelam115

To get into Safe Mode, you press F8 ON START UP .... before Windows starts, like kimsland said .... a list of options should pop up, one of them being Safe Mode.

after the "welcome" screen shows up,

then right after, it just says "saving setting" and makes the log off sound.

i can't even get to the desktop anymore, i can't access it really.....

Boot from your Xp CD, and select the first R prompt that comes up
Then log into your Administrator account to the Recovery Console (ie Press 1 then press enter) Hopefully no password

Once on the Recovery Console (basically a Dos prompt, black screen) type in:

chkdsk c:/f

You can also type chkdsk c: /? to get all the options of Check Disk
Anyway, do a Check Disk, then restart

The Ultimate Boot CD will do, and it's free
Not only that, but the UBCD can also help backup any important data you may have

I think you're missing the concept of using a live boot CD
It doesn't matter if your Windows is corrupt in any way
Boot CDs do not use Windows to boot up
