Windows Live Messenger not responding

A few times now I have tried to download Windows Live messenger, and every single time the following happens:

1. I download the program with no problems
2. I sign up for a Windows Live ID
3. I click on the button in my start menu to pull up windows live
4. It freezes, It pulls up and then stops responding, I dont even have a chance to try and sign in. I get a box that says program has stopped responding you can : close the program, search for a soultion on the internet and still cose the program.

I have done a scan before and after downloading Windows Live, and there is no virus.
I took off programs I dont use anymore *aim, various tool bars, games etc*.
I restarted my laptop, I have cleared my browsing history and temp files, I have uninstalled and reinstalled Windows live, rebooting after each, and it still freezes up like that.

Does anyone know what the problem could be? Is there anyway for me to fix it? Am I missing somthing when I download it? Any help is greatly apprecaited .

thnx

You didn't give any system information, but whether you're using Windows Cp or Vista, you can check the Event Viewer for Errors that correspond to the time of the freeze. That might give additional information to lead to a resolution:

Please look for Errors in the Event Viewer that are corresponding to the time of the "freezes."

Start> Run> type in eventvwr

Do this on each the System and the Applications logs:
  • [1]. Click to open the log>
    [2]. Look for the Error>
    [3] .Right click on the Error> Properties>
[4]. Click on Copy button, top right, below the down arrow >
    [5]. Paste here (Ctrl V)
    [6].NOTES
    • You can ignore Warnings and Information Events.
    • If you have a recurring Error with same ID#, same Source and same Description, only one copy is needed.
    • You don't need to include the lines of code in the box below the Description, if any.
    • Please do not copy the entire Event log.

Errors are time coded. Check the computer clock on freeze.

The path for Vista is different, but the idea is the same:
Reading the Event Viewer in Vista:

http://www.windowsnetworking.com/art...ows-Vista.html

I see a lot of questions about problems with this program. Most don't get resolved. But you might have something as simple as an installer problem so give it a try.

Errors are time coded. You will be looking for any Error that corresponds to this:
Quote:
It freezes, It pulls up and then stops responding,
So next time it does this- or force it to do it by repeating this:
3. I click on the button in my start menu to pull up windows live

Note the time of the freeze, then look for Errors are same time. Then follow the instructions with the screen shots on this page: http://www.windowsvistauserguide.com/event_viewer.htm

You are looking for Critical and Errors here:

This might be a better site for you to use.
