BSOD 0x7e ntfs.sys

Hi Guys
I have be trawling through the forum threads and don't see this combination of error anywhere.
I have a Toshiba Tecra P6 laptop 80g HDD 2G ram XP

I cannot start windows at all. Tried
  • all safe modes
  • XP boot disk - won't recognize the HDD at all so won't load
I have removed the HDD and put it in a caddy and have access to files etc.
BSOD happened during a windows update (wasn't paying attention)
I also know I was very low on disk space.
Freeing up disk space didn't fix.

Ran CHKDSK /f & /r on HDD in caddy.
All ok.

Any thoughts???

Are you able to run a harddrive diagnostics on the harddrive? Your HD manufacturer should have a free utility to do so.
