Did you install XP Service Pack 3? Or Service Pack 2 for Vista. You haven't wasted your time by updating Windows, it needed to be done regardless

Sorry, I didn't want to give the impression that I thought it was a waste of time (SP2 for Vista). I obviously made my comment too brief to convey my meaning. I was just giving an update.

empty system restore,,after deleting trojan and nasties,,that's what you have to do..
also run malwarebytes..in safe mode. |

Why is it a good idea to empty system restore?

Because it could hide "nasties" in the old restore points. Just create a new restore point right after deleting all the old ones

OK, but I was thinking that if I fail to clean things up, then a solution might be to use an old system restore point. If a piece of Malware exists in System Restore can that be running? Doesn't it just sit there doing nothing?
Thanks |

Malwarebytes will be mostly useless in Safe Mode
I haven't actually read this entire Topic, but here's our Malware removal guide: http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic58138.html |

Aqua - I still don't understand how a virus can run from System Restore.

ok, I have now read the thread and your logs (posted a week ago)
Please uninstall SUPERAntispyware Please uninstall your free AVG9 Then run the AVG Remover tool: http://www.avg.com/filedir/util/supp...remover_en.exe Then Restart Run IE Reset Fixit Tool: ![]() Or manually from here http://www.techspot.com/vb/post682762-2.html Startup Malwarebytes (in Normal Mode) Update it, and run a Quick scan Remove any found Malwares at the end of the scan Download free Avira Antivirus http://www.free-av.com/ Update it (the first couple of updates can be slow, this is normal) Run a full scan (also report on how this went) ---------- Note a Virus can easily run from System Restore, as soon as Restore is accessed Disable System Restore (to remove all old System Restore point) Info howto HERE ---------- Restart And provide a fresh HJT log, plus let me know how its running |
