Google Redirect - 8 steps completed
Hello,
I followed the 8-step process and I have attached the required logs. I'd really appreciate any guidance you can provide. My computer has been running very slowly for a while now and the startup is extremely slow - I am also having an issue with Google redirecting my search results to ad sites. Thanks Last edited by ab11viva; 11-24-2009 at 11:29 AM.. Reason: Still need help |

A Trojan and rootkit virus was found... I don't think all nasties were removed. You will have to perform a more thorough cleaning

Thanks for the response.
So, what tools would I need to perform a more thorough cleaning? I'm assuming that his would require an application that I haven't already used? |

The Kaspersky Online Scanner may be good to run first... Combofix should be used last. You have to follow the instructions very carefully. Combofix is very powerful, but it can create more trouble if you are not very, very careful

Welcome to TechSpot, aab11viva. My apology for the delay. We would appreciate your patience in place of the bumps- this is a very busy forum.
The main reason your computer is slow is because you have too many processes starting up, then running in the background. For instance> why load your web cam every time you log on? Why can't you just launch it from All Programs? Same for Power DVD, Real Player, Dell Media, Dell Support, WinZip (did you know that Windows XP has it's own compression/decompression tool and that you don't need to use this for zip files?) Did you know that the only processes you need on startup are the antivirus program, third party firewall if you have one, touchpad if using a laptop and possible entry for network like Network Magic?. You don't need anything else to start on boot and run in the background. You are getting malware from the game downloads.Dell includes Wild Tangent in their console. What is Wild Tangent? Quote:

Looks good. Have you notice any improvement in the speed? You still have a lot of unnecessary startups that can slow you down.
What about the redirects? Have they stopped. Please change this Service: Click on Start> Run> type in services.msc> OK> find Dell Game Console And/or WildTangent and do a double-click> Change the Startup type to Disabled> Stop the Service. Close I'd like you to run an online AV scan: Run Eset NOD32 Online AntiVirus Scanner HERE Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
Attach the log in next reply. |

Thanks - I do believe that my redirect issue has been resolved and my system appears to be operating a little faster. What other programs should I disable on startup? I thought I did pretty much everything except McAfee.

Please download OTMovit by Old Timer and save to your desktop.
You have two adware infections from TryMedia. Understand that if you continue to use this site, you are likely to continue to get adware or other malware: Trymedia Systems, Inc. is a division of RealNetworks that provides digital distribution services based on its proprietary ActiveMARK DRM and digital distribution technology. I'd like to check one more HijackThis scan, so please do that and leave new log. If all is okay, I'll have you remove the cleaning tools and set new restore point. As for what you need on Startup: Start> Run> type in msconfig> enter> Selective Startup> Startup tab> going by your last HJT log, you can uncheck any processes for: Blog This in Windows Live Writer Apple\Mobile Device Support\ Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe DellSupport and related processes jqs> Java Quick Start Microsoft LifeCam\MSCamS32 'Real' and any related processes Google Photos Screensa&ver When finished: Apply> OK Reboot into Safe Mode>> NOTE: first reboot after making changes brings up nag message- ignore and close after checking 'don't show this message again.' Stay in Selective Startup. You will be ale to access anything you unchecked in All Programs or shortcuts. Start> Run> type in services.msc> OK> double-click on each> Disable Service> Stop the Service> Change the Startup type as indicated: AppleMobileDeviceService>> Manual Bonjour Service/mDNSResponder>> Manual DSBrokerService (DellSupport brkrsvc>> Disable GameConsoleService>> Manual Google Updater Service (gusvc) >> Disable iPod Service -Manual JavaQuickStarterService- jqs>> Disable Reboot back into Normal Mode. Log looks clean. IF the problem has been resolved, you can remove the cleaning tools as follows:
Uninstall ComboFix.exe And all Backups of the files it deleted
Remove all of the tools we used and the files and folders they created
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes. You should now set a new Restore Point to prevent infection from any previous Restore Points. The easiest and safest way to do this is:
Stay safe! Let me know of you need more help in the future. |

You're welcome! Here are some tips for you:
Please follow these simple steps to keep your computer clean and secure: 1.Disable and Enable System Restore: This will help you to drop the old restore points and set a new, clean one: System Restore Guide 2.Stay current on updates:
3.Make Internet Explorer safer. Follow the suggestions HERE This Tutorial will help guide you through Configuring Security Settings, Managing Active X Controls and other safety features. 4.Remove Temporary Internet Files regularly: Use 5. Use an AntiVirus Software(only one)
6.Use a good, bi-directional firewall(one software firewall)[*]See Understanding and Using Firewalls including links to download a firewall. 7.Consider these programs for Extra Security
If I can be of further assistance, please let me know. |
