I believe windows installer is buggered. But there appears to be no way to remove it and reinstall it.

When I try to install MS Access the installer pops up then errors out.

Service Control Manager: Event 7023
The Windows Installer service terminated with the following error:
Access is denied.

(Security Access?)

(30 sec later)
DCOM: Event ID 10010
The server {000C101C-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.

This address mean anything to anyone?

MsiInstaller then gives the Warning Event 1015
Failed to connect to server. Error: 0x80080005

Searches at Microsoft do not find errors like that....If I am looking in the right places...


I tried running the Installer Cleanup Utility but the ICU has to be installed by...you guessed it....MS Installer...which is broken.


When I try to install other Win SPaks I get similar ....

Is a link to download and install the MSI engine. It might help to try to install over the old copy, it may not.

If you have a system-restore like utility, (ghost, regbackup, goback, etc) you might wanna try rolling back a point or two to see if you can figure out what software broke things. Based on your description, I would say that .Net framework is highly suspicious here. I've never seen .Net do that, but with MS I've learned dern near anything is possible.

Also, when I have seen MSI's throw access denied errors in Windows 2000, there are several possibilities.
1. Is the user account in the admin group? Being in the admin group usually gives you write access to most, but not all, of the files a MSI would want to use.
2. Some MSIs are written really really crappy, and REQUIRE you to be Administrator, not just an admin. Stupid, yes, very. But something to try.
3. If you're not in the admin group and trying to install, it's pretty obvious that it's trying to write to a directory or file that the account doesn't have permissions to.

Based on the errors that I'm seeing, I'd go reinstall the .NET framework as well- that may be what's hosering up the MSI engine.
