Safe Mode is Disabled..

I had a virus a few weeks ago, which I have since gotten rid of, but it evidently disabled safe mode.

Windows XP boots fine in "normal" mode but, when I try to boot in safe mode, it shows the files loading but then just restarts...no matter which safe mode option I choose.

I have tried replacing the registry keys for safe mode. I noticed that the SPTD.SYS file was missing, so I installed that.

Nothing seems to fix this issue...Does anyone know why Safe mode won't boot but Normal mode is fine?

I've been spinning my wheels on this for a week now....

PLEASE HELP!!!

Thanks

If you're sure, your computer is clean...

Download SafeBootKeyRepair by sUBs and save it to your desktop.
Double-click SafeBootKeyRepair.exeto run it.
Follow any prompts that may appear then post the log it produces.

Do you have the XP install CD? As i think the best bet at this point is an XP repair (which attempts to reinstall just the Windows stuff without affecting your files). But of course you still want to do a backup before attempting an XP repair

I don't...the computer came with a "recovery partition" but no actual disk.

Another possibility is, that the infection is not totally gone.
Did some malware pro on this board clean it for you, or did you do it by yourself?

Don't use any registry cleaners. No visible gains, on the other hand, one mistake and you can end up with not bootable computer.

I suggest, you start a new topic at "Virus and Malware Removal" forum, so they can check you out.
