i have windows XP pro on one hdd, and all my data on another. So I already tired reinstalling windows, but the data hdd just infected it again (without the computer being on any network or anything like that). I can reinstal windows, that's not problem, but I can't just format the data drive, I can't afford to lose it, so I'm looking for some help if it's not too much trouble.

whatever this malware is, it keeps opening IE. IE won't even be open (because I don't use it) and 14 or so windows of it will open on their own. Usually when I'm using the keyboard (which is a lot). heck it's reach 41 windows and another time made the whole system freeze up/crash hard.

what I normally use is FF, and it keep redirecting pages i'm using to the home page. even the home page will redirect to the home page. again it seem to happen a lot more when i press a key than when i only use the mouse.

I tried scanning with everything I could think of, but they didn't fix the problem.

came here, did the 8 things (well, I didn't remove java, but it didn't have Java since I had just reinstalled windows), and now I have the logs.

anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated, because I can't even figure out what this thing is.

first off thanks for trying to help me.

ok, i got combo fix from http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe while also trying http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407 list of fixes and such.

as per their advise, i ran it according to http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix. I closed my firewall, spybot, even things like Rk launcher for the heck of it. Avast, the best I could figure out was telling it to shut off it's real time scans.

I have the combo fix logs from that, and will get a new hijack this log momentarily. though I have already gotten to step 3 here: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=139313 before knowing someone had posted here.

1. Please open Notepad

• Click Start , then Run
• Type notepad .exe in the Run Box.

2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:


3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.




5. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please post the following reports/logs into your next reply:

and what does this do? sorry, i would rather know what i'm having combofix do to my system. if it's too complex that's ok, but like i said i would rather have some idea than just blindly doing things.

well i guess that's some type of explanation.... sorry i don't mean to doubt you or offend you in anyway, but you can't always do something just because you read it on the internet. oh well, as long as nothing worse happens to my data i can always reinstall windows if need so, why the heck not?

though that has to be one of the first times I've heard this thing use it's BIOS speaker.

anyway after combo fix updated itself they did their things no problem.

and again thanks for helping me out. even if it isn't fully fixed yet, the browsers are behaving for the time being. doesn't mean it's fully fixed, but i would call it a good sign.

I fully understand

Uninstall Combofix:
Go Start > Run [Vista users, go Start>"Start search"]
Type in:
Combofix /Uninstall
Note the space between the "Combofix" and the "/Uninstall"
Click OK (Vista users - press Enter).
Restart computer.

1. Download Temp File Cleaner (TFC)
Double click on TFC.exe to run the program.
Click on Start button to begin cleaning process.
TFC will close all running programs, and it may ask you to restart computer.


2. Go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

1. Disable your active antivirus program.
2. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
3. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
4. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
5. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:

• Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
• Archives
• Mail databases

6. Click on My Computer under Scan.
7. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
8. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
9. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt before clicking on the Save button. Then post it here.

I should probably say something about that temp folder thing, since I reinstalled windows this last time, I've been using FF portable.

I used the school's computers to get it all it's add-on's (like noscript and adblock plus) since i figured their computers probably weren't infected. I "made" it right before installing windows this last time, so it's only been on this last install of windows, since i wanted to keep my computer away from the internet as much as I could once i thought it was my other hdd that was infected.

The only way I know to clean it is to out right delete it. I can do that, this thing has opera, normal FF, and IE on it. but none of them have even a simple ad block, they're all stock, out of date installs.

I'm not sure what's your point here....

well if it's supposed to clean out all temp files, it might miss FF portable, it's sitting on my desktop, as if it was a normal file, not a program. i don't even know how to get ccleaner to clean it. maybe i just don't know what i'm talking about

If it's portable, you simply delete that file and you're done.

well it has at least things like history bookmarks and saved tabs. I don't know if it keeps like temp files and such. if you think it's for the best, i can just delete the whole folder, removing it and all it's parts.

well, unless this malware has jumped into an old file, i'm going to say the kaspersky scan didn't find anything that's actually harmful.

WPI is windows post installer, the same one i've been using for well over 6 months.
that iso I've had for a long time, and used it long before any of this started. i can delete it though if like the virus is in there or something odd like that.

i know it's safe to do so, i'm more wondering if it's recommended. or if it's fine to just keep using it.

oh and something hid the hidden folers, protected files, and file extentions on me. Don't know if that was suppost to happen or not. I keep that stuff shown because i've learned it's for the better.

virus not gone. i wish i could uninstall IE, i know it wouldn't fix the computer, but it would keep it from annoying me. It's back to the point of I can't even type in notepad and copy it into FF becaise IE opens so many times while i'm in notepad and if I hit 1 key while copying it into FF, it goes to the home page. I hate using my laptop because the simple task of displaying characters i've typed seems to bog it down every few minutes, but this why i keep the dieing piece of junk around, because 2 computers beats 1.

umm.... FF portable was still redirecting after OTM, and it didn't remove the files, only moved them else where. if they were the problem, then they infected things by being in a random place, and they're in a random place right now. maybe i just don't know what i'm talking about.

I decided to kill FF portable though, and use the normal FF once I updated it. haven't given it it's addon's yet but meh.
I don't know if it's acted up since then. like i don't remember. i'm kinda under the weather, and my memory isn't so great when i'm tired all the time (like how I am now).
