XP - Unmountable Boot Volume now wrong file system

Help!

Having insalled a live update to Norton Antivirus, my computer rebooted this morning and started coming up with the blue screen of death and the error message Unmountable Boot Volume.

Having followed the recommended suggestions I found on the web -

In the Windows XP Recovery Console:
Then type "chkdsk /p" without the quotes and hit enter
When that is done type "fixboot" and hit enter
"Y" and enter at the prompt
Then type "exit" and hit enter
The system will now reboot into Windows

- I now have a hard disk that on booting gives an error "NTLDR not found".

If I put another bootable HDD on and boot into windows XP with the old XP disk as a second drive, it shows up as a FAT system with only 10MB... this is a 40GB drive

Needless to say I have recent data on the HDD that I need - can anyone help??

Thanks

First of all, don't write anything to it yet. It only decreases the possibilities to recover data.

Drive diagnostic utilities compendium has some applications you could try, some others include GetDataBack and Testdisk.

I ran the Disf Fitness Test and fixed some bad sectors but the disk is still being recognised as a 10MB FAT disk - any idea how I can get access to the data that still appears to be there somewhere?

A worthy util that has saved many Harddisks is:
HDD Regenerator from http://www.dposoft.net/
Not the cheapest, but one of (if not) THE best.
