Final post

This is my first foray into the cyber geek, klingon speaking world of the 'Internet Community' and my last. My intention was to maybe help somebody else out as I have been helped, not to be lambsted by some sarcastic basement dweller with an attitude. Perhaps if you had replied without all the 'Baited breath' comments and the like I may have felt more inclined to be of assistance.

Now I don't.

Please, feel free to come back with some 'witty' comeback (probably in binary), but to be honest....I wont be checking back so you'd be wasting your time.

Some people.............

To maldoon

Another magic disk, and a poster who is all bluster and no substance. If the CD works as well as you say, then a name and source would be welcomed, but if you are merely spouting confusing nonsense, go take a flying jump in the Thames or whatever body of water is closest and most convenient. In other words, put up or shut up.
The EEProm shorting Technique to clear Dell Primary Passwords is a long recognized successful procedure and not just from me. I have cleared around 18 boards and laptops using it and have had feedback from 100s of people who used it successfully since I originally posted in Sep2005. Asset.com will NOT delete and reset a Service Tag, but it will set one on a board that has none assigned with an undocumented Switch on a one time basis only. It will delete and reset Asset and Owner Tags without restriction. Service Tag.EXE will do all 3 and is on Dell Technicians CDs, of which I have several different versions(A23, A27, A30) as Dell updates and adds to them to support newer boards as they are released. The Service Tag. EXE will indeed erase the EEProm chip if you can boot from it, but frequently all peripheal drives are disabled in BIOS and the Harddrive is the only bootable device left. If the Primary BIOS Password is also set, you are blocked from any further entry into the laptop for ANY reason. This is the bugger that requires the shorting/grounding procedures on the EEProm chip to clear.
Before you call me a cheeky little fellow as you did my friend and coworker judslat, I am 75 years old and 6'3".
Neither one of us has made tuppence off this project of ours, but like most of our requestors, have had the frustration of buying a locked Dell laptop and not being able to clear the password. I took me 2+1/2 years to find all the files and software we send out or have on the website. Oh, incidentally, Jud and I are separated by over 4000 miles as I am in Texas USA and he is in the UK. A bit of international cooperation and friendship.

Inspiron 1150 success

Just wanted to share what worked for me.

On Inspiron 1150 I found the (Microchip) 24LC16B on the underside of the mobo, between the daughter card and DIMM B.

I could have just shorted out the pins, but wanted to read the chip, since the hard drive password might be the same as the master/admin. I knew it was locked because I tried the drive in other pc's.

Followed directions from dp.allhyper.com
The circuit is very, very easy to build and the software is free. About $2 for the 2 diodes and resistors from radioshack.

I got the admin/master password and it ended being the same password for hard drive.

and thanks Paragon33 for help

Update!
After reading the chip you can decrypt it yourself with a freeware prog called CmosPwd.

Kudos

That is just great and I would imagine the link you gave will get many hits. I had a feeling that something along those lines was possible, but could never find any website with a method. Thanks for your feedback.

Did you make the HD bootable with the reset files on it?

If so just change the boot order to boot from Cd and boot with XP disk in
If you still have the floppy in the drive remove it.

Sorry I'm just a bit confused at the moment

Wow what a site, if you just want to recover the password without shorting it then this site is fantastic,
I'm going to build the device and test it and then put a link on the site for it.

I did my C840

Thank you everybody in this discussion especially Paragon33 and Ididmyc600. My story:

I bought a second-hand latitude c840 for very cheap. Much to my disappointment I later found out it had a bios pwd on it. I soon stumbled upon this discussion and followed the instructions for the "paper-clip" method and IT WORKED. THE PINS I USED ON THE LATITUDE C840 BTW WERE 4 AND 6 AND I SHORTED THEM WHEN THE BIOS LOAD BAR WAS ABOUT HALF WAY THROUGH. Took me about 1/2 hour to find the EEprom and clear the pwd after about 3 hours of reading. It is basically UNDER THE "X" KEY AND UNDER THE OPTICAL DRIVE that was there. So all i had to do was just take out the keybaord and the optical drive. Paragon's "Additional Info" has a good picture of it. I couldn't find it using that picture b/c it was a little close. Anyway, Thanks to all the helped i am very happy with my new laptop.

**This is for the dreaded BIOS password prompt at bootup**
Just wanted to thank Paragon33 for all of his information on this topic. Doing a search on Google brought me here. After trying the password reset and nothing worked, figured I would short the Eeprom. First off, the laptop I am using is a Latitude X1. This is the tiny 2.5 lb laptop. Disassembled the laptop and could not find the chip. Finally, removed the entire motherboard from the assembly and the chip was on the bottom, toward the front of the laptop where the touchpad would be if you drilled straight down. The chip is a newer Atmel chip, the 24C04 chip. Didn't want to cut into the laptop, so I soldered some wires (3, 4, 6, and 7) to the chip since I didn't know which ones would have to be shorted. After assembling the laptop together somewhat, I tried the 4 & 6 pins and turned the laptop on. After a few seconds, laptop powered off. I could not turn it on. After taking off the pins, the laptop powered on automatically and then gave me an invalid system time, F1 to continue or F2 to go through setup. After that, took just a little while longer to figure out the asset.com and what I needed to type. Now, am able to boot my laptop and get back to the files I was afraid of losing. Backed up all my critical data, then tossed a "Hook 'Em Horns" to Paragon33. Feels good to follow the threads here and actually have something work for a change. Thanks again guys!

If you manage it before Wednesday let us know how you go on.

There is one way but it costs money, its cheaper to buy another drive , assuming you dont mind losing the data on the other, in which case use the service that costs money.

No the password doesnt reapply itself if you put a new drive in.
