Well, I had mixed results! The good news is that it worked and I have access to now. Thanks! The bad news is that now battery will not charge. Power cable is working without battery so power it getting to computer but the battery charge light does not come on and the battery is not now charging. It was working fine prior to shorting trick. I have run Dell diagnostic and on test its says battery charging, but again, it is not and light indicating adapter connected and charging battery does not come on. Is there a way to fix this or is something “fried”? Should I attempt short again? It is not burned out light as when I use program to rest TAG and screen comes up that says it is erasing Eprom the adapter connection/battery charge light comes on. Just so you know all the facts, I also upgraded BIOS from A03 to A11.

Any Help?

Paragon33,

I tried the Boot CD created from your Disk. It boots up, indicates System Id, Name & Bios revision and the note : etc ... (Y/N).
Pressing Y, it says
DELL ...

"EE-PCB.exe: Error 0"

then FDD calibration utility.

When I turn on the computer the bios settings are still locked ..

Do you have any idea ?

Thank U

It works!!!!

First and foremost I want to THANK Paragon33 for the zip file he sent me
Then I want to share some experience I had.
I burned the extracted files to a bootable CD (I dont have floppy on my laptop)
The problem was that the OS was Windows 98SE (boot floppy image) and when I tried to start Autoexec.bat, an error message was displayed: "EE-CPB.EXE - no such file or directory". After 0.5 h I fidureg it out - this version of DOS I am using converts dashes "-" into underscores "_" and my file is read as EE_CPB.EXE instead of EE-CPB.EXE, but SVCTAG still searches for "dashed" version. So here is the solution in the case: run Autoexec.bat, remeber the SystemID value displayed and also look what is the file version that is needed,i.e. file that causes error (EE-CPB.EXE in my case).Look into the file SVCTAG.INF for the appropriate switches for the executable corresponding to your SystemID (in my case 011e: DELL:EE-CPB:ASSET:/nopause:/forcetype:/s) and run the executanle (my case EE_CPB.EXE xxxxxxx /nopause /forcetype /s) - use "_" instead of "-". This will erase EProm. Now run this: ASSET.COM xxxxxxx /s and you are DONE. (xxxxx is the service tag of your machine without # sign). Good luck to all. And thanks again Paragon33

IhateDell

Doesn't work,

I checked in the svctag.inf list and I don't find the system Id of my computer : 0x0182. i think that's the reason svctag returns "error 0". Maybe there's a newer revision of the svctag & svctag.inf ....

Lamfuest, the diskette has worked for me on all the ones I have used it on, except the Inspiron 6000. That uses a different BIOS and password system very similar to the versions used on the old Inspiron 3000/3200/3500/7000/7500 series, which had only a System Password, no Admin or HDD option, and was not service tag based. There may be other models with the same type system. Incidentally, I have updated the files in the DST .zip file to include later models since Phuang made his CD ISO file and posted the link. I also have a later Dell Tech CD(7-20-05) with BIOS, Diagnostics, and Service Tag Software, but the size is too large to send by Email attachment. If anyone reading this has a server that can make it available by download, sing out and I'll mail you a copy you can use to make a download link.

I bought my Dell Inspiron 8200 in a secondhand store.
I can not access any drives (CD, Hard-drive, floppy-drive) nor can I access CMOS-Setup. I simply receive a Message: "" This computer system, # 3PSPL11-595B, s protected by a password authentication system. You cannot access the data on this computer without the correct password.
Please type in the primary or administrator password and press <Enter> ""
does anyone know how to reset primary password(bios) on my computer?Any help would be appreciated.

I got the zip file wit software from paragon33 and booted into dos and run the software from a usb stick. reset the service tag and presto...all sorted.

in a nutshell, if it is only admin password that you need (that is you can access bios but cannot change settings) then you don't need to take your laptop apart to short pins on the eeprom chip - the software will do the job for you!

CDR version of the Service Tag File

I finally came up with a successful bootable CDR version of the DST .zip File to make a floppy diskette I had previously sent to most of the folks who contacted me. This will allow Dell owners who do not have a floppy drive to use this useful software.
