BusinessWorks 12.1 error

One of my client's has BusinessWorks 12.1 at their office, which worked fine until one of their employee's was 'let go' , now whenever more than one workstation attempts to access the program, they receive the following error:

"SYSTEM ACCESS DENIED. The maximum number of network users allowed by the BusinessWorks system have already signed on."

I installed the software on our test bench machines and get the same results. I've contacted the SW maker (Best/Sage/Buckhead, or whatever they are calling themselves at the moment) and get the "oh-sorry-we-can't-help-you-you-have-to-buy-the-upgrade" response.

Is anyone out there familiar with this software? It seems like it would be a relatively simple fix, I just can't seem to find it.

I saw the following on some website.

They had problems printing cheques:
If they run Windows 2000, this Critical update breaks some BW 12.1:
Security Update for Windows 2000 (KB840987) [Part of "MS04031"]
Uninstall it (Control Panel/Add-Remove programs) and it works again!
The problem did not occurr under XP.

Could it be another (W2K) update at the time of the 'let go'?

Also, check the security settings on the BW folder(s). There could even be a MS-Domain problem, but I can NOT help you there.
