Just thought I might title the subject in Utilties Forum for easier search engine access.

Alternatively:

Download PocketKillbox here: http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip. Extract it from the zip file, remember where it goes.
Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. In the "Paste Full Path of File to Delete" box, fill in the full path/filename you want to delete.
Click on the Action menu and choose "Delete on Reboot". In the Action menu select "Process and Reboot".
When prompted to reboot, do so.

To delete files with 'funny' characters (? etc.) in it:
Get deletefxpfiles from http://www.deletefxpfiles.com/index2.html

To delete files that keep saying 'in use':
Get DrDelete from e.g. http://cyberiapc.com/spywaretools/drdelete.zip
You may need to run RegEdit to delete registry calls to that file. Do a Search for that filename in RegEdit.

Another one for stubborn files:
Get Unlocker from http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/...Unlocker.shtml
Quote:
Unlocker is an explorer extension that allows you with a simple right-click of the mouse on a file or folder to get rid of error message such as error deleting file or folder, cannot delete folder: it is used by another person or program.

Helps delete locked files with error messages like:

- Cannot delete file: Access is denied
- There has been a sharing violation.
- The source or destination file may be in use.
- The file is in use by another program or user.
- Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.

Another great program to have on hand is called JV16 Power Tools. Just be careful on what you are doing with the program. It is very powerful...

Hi guys, just registered to say thanks for pointing myself and others in the direction of delinvfile....it got rid of a pesky super-long file from my desktop that I've been struggling to delete for ages. Thanks very very much!

If you were to just type in .sqm files in the google search box, you will find a lot of entries on what those files are, what they do and how to get rid of them. They are basically log files from microsoft messenger and some other MS programs. Looks to be they are either log files or phone home customer data files. The consensus seems to be they don't belong in the root directory regardless what they are. I'd suggest you do a search to figure out which of the programs you are using and the appropriate area to disable the entries or uninstall the corresponding program. Apparently they can be removed but on the next reboot, they will be back.

DANG! LOL I hate when I post in year old threads!
