My system uses 50-60 % of its memory when sitting at idle. I see this in the task manager. Is this normal. I have no programs open exept for my OS which is w2k.

A lot depends on how much ram you have.
Have you checked for viruses/spyware etc?

There is a spyware/virus thing that pops up, more like flashes, at boot up.
