Here are my symptoms:
1. When Windows starts up, the McAfee 'M' in the task bar goes red for a few seconds, then turns black. When I attempt to enable it, it immediately turns black again.
2. I can't download any Windows updates because the virus has someone messed with my Windows activation settings. (I activated Windows months ago.)
3. When I click on the windows firewall icon, I get a message saying, "Due to an unidentified problem, Windows cannot display Windows Firewall Settings'.

About my computer:
Windows XP Media Center Edition V. 2002 SP2
McAfee VirusScan Build 10.0.27 Engine Version 5100 DAT Version 4859

What I have tried:
1. I have ran the following virus programs: AVG, Mcafee, BitDefender, F-Secure, Kaspersky, Semantec, Spybot, Ewido, and Spy Sweeper and found nothing.
2. I attempted to manually start McAfee.com from services.msc, but it immediately disables itself.
3. I have also ran SmitFraudFix, VirtumundoBeGone, VundoFix, aboutbuster, and cwshredder.

Please Help!

Thanks,
Mike

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

Rename HijackThis.exe to HijackThis1991.exe and post a fresh HJT log.

This is because some malware can hide from HijackThis.exe.

Download the Pocket Killbox programme from HERE. Extract it but don`t run it yet.

You might want to copy and paste these instructions into a notepad file. Then you can have the file open in safe mode, so you can follow the instructions easier.

Turn off system restore.(XP/ME only) See how here.> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial56.html

Boot into safe mode, under your normal user name(NOT THE ADMINISTRATOR ACCOUNT). See how here.> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial61.html

In Windows Explorer, turn on "Show all files and folders, including hidden and system". See how here.> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial62.html

Run HJT with no other programmes open(except notepad). Click the scan button. Have HJT fix the following, by placing a tick in the little box next to(if there).

O20 - Winlogon Notify: pasksa - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\pasksa.dll

Click on the fix checked button.

Close HJT.

Run the killbox.exe file. When it loads type the full path to the file you would like to delete in the field and check the delete file on reboot button. press the Delete File button (looks like a red circle with a white X). It will prompt you to reboot, select no until you have finished inputting the files you want to delete, only then allow it to reboot and hopefully your files will now be deleted.

This is the filepath you need to enter into killbox.

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\pasksa.dll

Once your system has rebooted, turn system restore back on and rehide your protected OS files.

Post a fresh HJT log and let me know how your system is running.

Tried what you mentioned

My system is still showing the same symptoms.

Here is the new hijackthis log.

Thanks,
Mike

Your HJT log appears to be clean.

Have HJT fix this inactive entry.

O20 - Winlogon Notify: obbn13t - obbn13t.dll (file missing)

Just to make sure, search your system for the obbn13t.dll file. If you find it, have Killbox delete it.

You`re running two antivirus programmes. This is not recommended and can cause conflicts etc. You should uninstall one of them.

Once you`ve done that, let me know how your system is running.

Still not working

I had HJT fix the inactive entry, but my system is still the same.

I uninstalled AVG.

Here is my new log.

Thanks.

Your HJT log is now clean.

Try uninstalling and reinstalling your antivirus programme and see if that helps.

If not, maybe doing a Windows repair as per this thread HERE will help.

Still not working

I reinstalled McAfee, but am still seeing the same things:

Will the system repair help if I have a virus/trojan? I got my computer from Dell and did not receive a Windows CD since I have Media Center edition. Can this utility be perfomed without the original CD? Dell said that I could hit ctrl-F11 during startup and then I could perform a 'PC restore' which would reinstall the OS but would wipe all of my installed apps and data on my hard drive.

What do you recommend?

Thanks again for all of your help.

Mike

Oh dear that`s not good.

You can`t do a Windows repair without having a Windows cd.

If the virus has damaged your OS files, then doing a restore as per the Dell instructions may be the only course of action left open to you.

The only other suggestion I have, is to go HERE and follow the instructions exactly. Hopefully if you do still have a virus infection, it will help to eliminate it. Your last HJT log showed no sign of infection, but that`s no guarantee that there isn`t one present.

Please let me know how you get on.

Things are working a little better now, but not all the way...

I ran sharedaccess.reg and now I my firewall is working and I was able to authenticate my version of Windows. I tried to download the latest updates from Microsoft, but was unable to download and install some critical updates that my computer still needs. When I try to download them, I get the following error from Microsoft:

Error Code: 0x8007F0DA
Try to install the update again, or request help from one of the following resources.

I followed Microsoft's instructions to fix this problem, but it did not work.

Any suggestions?

Mike
