xubuntu Not normal? Programs not made for it?

Ok, please bear with me. This is my very first day running Linux. I have installed xubuntu and want to install things in the following list...

audio editing software
open office
.mp3 codec
dvd codec
a game

But I followed the directions and no-go! So, can somebody give me a known working application to install on xubuntu, and walk me step by step into the process? One more thing. The Linux computer does NOT have an internet connection. So downloads need to be less then 1gb.

thanks for your help!

It seems that Xubuntu might only run certain apps made for it. why not just run Ubuntu?

That'll be a problem since 99% of the time, the easiest way to install something is through Synaptic.
