I think Home will be much better when they get the game themed rooms up and running.

Don't worry. It'll be fine in the heat. Sony didn't build it so you are forced to play in a cold environment.

Don't worry about it,i have played with mine in ambient temp's of about 30 degrees and up and so far no problems.
The only thing i have done is that i have opened it and sanded the surface of the heatsink and replaced the thermal paste.

No bad issues for me and it has a very low failure rate

Yeah, the product is very well made, I live in Australia so it gets very hot here, upwards of 35 degrees Celsius on some days and there is no problems with heat.

No problem, Playstation network is free to play games, communicate etc. The Playstation Home is currently in BETA, I haven't used it, but I have been told its buggy, but it is a BETA remember.

The chart on BM's link is exactly what you're looking for on PS2 compatibility. Systems with the Emotion Engine will have the best backward compatibility - unfortunately you can't buy that version anymore. Sony removed this feature to help cut costs in attempts to be more competitive with Nintendo and MS.
Just like hyn said Home is pretty boring - I've logged into it a couple of times and my 4 year old was really interested, but I wasn't after 5 or so minutes. Hopefully as it comes out of beta it will get better.

Omega, All PS3s are backward compatible with PS1 software. Final Fantasy VII will work.
