Windows XP Slow Boot & Connection

When I start my laptop the blue error message screen tends to pop up and a consistancy test on drive "D" begins almost every time. Furthermore, taskbar items take almost 5 minutes to load, and my HP Wireless Assistant will not even load up for about 10 minutes after start up. This is quite devastating and annoying to me when trying to take care of business and type out a few research papers. I am wondering what I need to do to resolve this problem.
Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Please let me know what to do.

-Michael

Disk consistency is checked when the operating system was writing to the disk and you switched off the machine while it was doing it (or when there is something REALLY wrong with the hard drive - write failures, bad sectors, etc). Make sure you are properly shutting down and letting the machine power itself off.

As for programs at startup, probably you have installed a few programs that run things at startup. Have you considered reinstalling Windows and installing only what you want/need?
