Si3112 woes help

I've been having a problem for sometime with XP (I know! who hasn't) on a clean install all is well until I get to MS updates and the lot crashes.
it reloads and crashes after startup 30sec-2mins and quotes a problem with Si3112
Mobo is a Gigabyte K7-N400 pro2
Chip AMD 3000+
1Gb of DDR Ram
2 160gb Seagate Barracuda HD

Anyone got any idea what's going on? as the Si3112 is on the Gigabyte Mobo drivers disk which loads up OK?

First, we find WXP very stable, with very few clients, "having a problem."

We do see a LOT of problems with the SATA drivers on some motherboards... mainly ASUS, but mostly with the SATA hard drive. Could it be the SATA drivers are bad?
