I'm guessing it's Realtek based Onboard sound?
In the Control panel there should be a "Sound Effects Manager" or something similar, make sure the Environment is set to Default, or None.
If your PC uses something other than AC97, find out what it is - you could use this http://www.cpuid.com/pcwizard.php
