How to get rid of Norton's AV

I'd like to get rid of Norton's AV on my mom's computer and replace it with Avast---but I'm not sure how to go about it. She has a setup where the internet is always on, so I need to know how to turn that off and back on again (I still have dialup myself, so I'm not familiar with cable hookups etc.), and also how to remove the Norton's completely.

Much better to use the Norton Removal Tool

Just sit back and let it remove every trace of Norton.

Thanks--I'll unplug the cable and use the Norton Removal tool.
