Apologies for posting in wrong slot first time. Problem is: got new computer, installed this game (registered version) all went well until I tried to launch then screen went black. Un-installed, erased registry entries, re-installed & same thing happened. Anyone have any ideas as to problem?

Ok, first post your specs

second,if xp go to start -> run -> type dxdiag
if vista hold the windows button on your keyboard and hit 'R' then type dxdiag

What version directX do you have, if it's below direct X 10 you can go to video and run direct3d and directdraw tests.

I would start with that and see if anything obvious jumps out

G'day Blind Dragon; Thanks for help. (sorry to be pest re: not posting PC specs - as still finding way around site). PC is friends, it's Win XP & has all necessary ram, memory, games & graphics cards, direct X etc. Game has worked on their computer before upgrade (2 new hard drives & increased ram). Know this game has big problems generally, but kids want it running - I'd rather bin it. Got any other ideas? Regards Hardman

This isn't really a list of specs. Can you try to list them even if you think it isn't necessary? Use this link as a guide. If you don't know all of it, do the best you can.

The Sims Deluxe Edition Wont Re-Install

See profile for computer specs (not good but getting better). The Sims Deluxe Edition requires as a minimum for an operating system of XP: CPU 233MHz; Intell Pentium II processor;128MB RAM; CD/DVD ROM x4; Hard drive space 1.4 GB plus save space & Video High Colour 800x600 resolution.
Game specs say nothing about video chip memory which is 128MB on this computer. Note, this computer doesn't have a separate Video Card. Could this be the problem?

Hmm, wasn't a problem before upgrade & resolution is 'minimum requirement' but will try anything at this point.
Thanks for your continued help - appreciate it. Will get back to you as soon as.

Well, you are supposed to use a graphics card that is compatible with directX9.0 so I don't know that you will be able to get around that -> see my first post to check what version of dx you have

Hello again you helpful and very patient techos. Have altered monistor resolution OK. Double checked all game specs. Checked DivX to ensure it's the right one. Went to re-install and now it comes up with a box saying: 'sku number not found in registry'. I've been thru registry again just to make sure everything has been deleted. Nothing hiding there. Checked main drives. Nothing hiding there. Tried to re-install again and same box comes up. This is very frustrating. Can I enter the sku number (bar code number?) from the box directly into registry? Not a good idea I hear you say - HELP !

Hi Blind Dragon - you have the patience of Jobe! :)
I did some reading of old posts when I first joined this site & have religiously followed all of these directions (several times just to be sure). Hand on heart - I double checked by going thru all of the ones you sent today. Same thing happens. Perhaps I should keep the game & bin their computer. What you think?
OK, enough levity, I am serious about solving this problem. It's become an obsession. Thanks for helping, I appreciate it.

Oh, Blind Dragon. Did I mention that I have been to 'thesims.com' & had absolutely no luck with solving this problem. In fact, they were decidedly unhelpful (what a surprise).

Hmm, did download uninstall utility & seemed to work. I checked registry (doesn't mean anything though).
Well, thank you for all of your help. Really appreciate it. If I find a solution I'll post it. You'll probably never get this problem again (quiet giggle). Cheers for now

I read your advice about getting rid of the old install, my only question is does that also apply to the sims complete collection .. because I noticed that you were mostly referring to sims 2 and I didn't want to delete the wrong thing

(this is the part I'm referring to-)

If you have the CD that came with the game insert it, run it, Double-click on the folder called Eraser, and double-click on the file named SimsEraser.exe

or you can use the link I provided in my previous post.

Thank u for responding, but I everytime I delete it & restart , it's still there, I do have all 4 disks that came with the sims complete collection, I can't find the sims eraser anywhere.. however I did find it at the EA site and I downloaded and ran it. It said all the sims had been removed... once again I restarted and it's still there.. I guess this is just hopeless... but thank you for trying to help me. Oh and of the codes u told me to delete.. I have NO IDEA which is which.. and I don't want to delete the wrong thing.... I left the list of the codes I have but none match the ones u told me to delete :( ok well again thanks for trying
