Well just yesterday evening I finally got my hands on the prize! (and been navigating through ever since).

I'm very excited, this little laptop is really fun and I could see myself putting it to very good use.



I got a tiny wireless mouse for it too as you can see:





Speaking of good use, I'm new to Linux, this is the first time I've ever used it so...
I immediately thought what good use could be... well... :P

and actually Techspot isnt that bad on a smaller screen, it looks like that because it was connected to the right monitor and had a resolution of 1280x1024 and through the EeePC you can only see the top left chunk of the whole 17" monitor

Took a screenshot using the Eee of how it looks without the connected monitor, its good enough, the news don't slide across so there's no need to move the horizontal bar from left to right.

I am also an Eee PC user. I have the 701-4G Black, and it has been an excellent companion for mobile work. I use it to take notes in classes and it is a definite asset for me now. It really is a wonderful little device, the pictures do not justify how amazing it actually is!

However, it does take a bit of tweaking to make it match your taste. For example, if you find the default tabbed-interface to be a bit immature, you can activate the full KDE desktop, since the OS is a custom build of Xandros.

eeeuser.com is a site you should definitely visit if you own an Eee. The information there (especially the wiki) is very helpful.


A few tweaks I would recommend:

Activate advanced desktop mode (KDE)

Enable horizontal scrolling in Firefox (horizontal scroll is bugged by default in Firefox)

If you upgrade to over 1GB of RAM, re-compile the Xandros kernel to recognize all of it:

I have also installed VLC Media Player to play all my videos. Since Xandros is a Debian-based OS, installation is quite simple: a few lines of apt-get should do it.

Also consider purchasing an SDHC card for additional storage. The advantage of using the built-in card reader for extra storage (instead of USB drives) is that the card will not stick out from the side like USB drives.

That looks nice... Linux doesn't seem to carry support for Arial fonts, or at least not the Eee distro, those are used heavily here and in many other sites but replacing with Verdana (or something close to that) doesn't seem to hurt so bad.

And yes, we are opening many many contests later on this year, just let me get settled after our redesign and new backend are ready.

The Microsoft core fonts package is available for most linux distros and naturally it can be installed on Debian and friends too.

anyway I managed to make the USB with XP, and now I can choose to either boot to Xandros or WinXP,
both run extremely well...

After getting more acquainted with Linux I might move on to EeeXubuntu soon
