Logging off won't stop!

ADVENT AL-096
Windows Vista Home Premium.
Celeron M

Guys,

I'm at a loss as what to do.

I have been given a laptop for the kids to use.
I was sanatising it. ie removing users/pictures/music etc.
Before doing this though I created an admin account so at least I would have access.
When I had finished I went to shut it down.........a messeage can on the screen saying that the shutting down audio was still running and could not close. Click continue if you want to proceed.
I clicked continue. The screen then showed the logging off logo and has stayed like that for the last 2 hours!
If I press the power button the laptop goes into standby. When I press it again it shows the log off logo.
It will not let me do anything else.

I'll even reset the laptop if I could, but can't

Hope someone has a bit of advice.

"saying that the shutting down audio was still running and could not close"

It would help if you typed the exact message, not your version of it.

System specs
you can force a power off (when the laptop is still on) by pressing and holding the power button for a few seconds.

Have you looked at the Microsoft VISTA knowledge base for reports of similar problems?

Sorry about that. I didn't think it would have caused a problem so I just clicked on the 'ok' button. I couldn't remember the wording then when things started to go wrong.

Thanks,

I was holding the power button for about 5 secs and it was doing nothing.

I then tried it for 10seconds and

It's working again now.

Thanks for all your help guys. I'd still be staring at the screen if it wasn't for you.
