55 processes are way too much. My PC runs fine (and fast) with 16 processes

I hate you! I have 26 on bootup because of all the crap I have installed.

MSN, AIM, ATI tray tools, Kero firewall, AVG, freakin SIX svchost.exe's

16... nice. the lowest I can get mine down to is 18

the firewall and anti-virus programs are the only ones that need to start up with windows. MSN, AIM, etc do not need to start up automatically, so you can disable them.

the easiest way is: start > run > type "msconfig" > startup tab > uncheck anything you don't want to start up

Oh no, I knew that. Just I like them booting up with my computer so I don't have to open them manually. I can't think of a situation where I would boot up and not use those programs

I just have checked AVG antivirus on startup, and the PC boots damn quick

I have a question for you [<= 20] processes guys... Don't you also have your drivers (LAN, Video, etc.) start up with your system? Thats the only thing I have to startup (besides AVG), and on bootup I have about 30 processes running :/.

How do I know what programs I need on my computer and what processes I need on startup? On my startup config thing it has like 40 that I don't know what they are. I also have like 5 programs that I don't know what they are. Like BigFix... whats that?

So what, don't you use your drivers? Whats the point of starting them manually if you can simply let the machine start them? I'm confused :/.

Go to msconfig, then just leave the programs you need to boot up. I just leave my antivirus. Then everything else I could need, like msn and all that crap, I start them when I want. You can remove everything you like. Just leave what you want.

I don't have to start them manually. You can uncheck them, and they will still work properly.

They will work properly, but they need to be started first... Or don't they? In SafeMode (where nothing starts with the system) I get intense choppiness because my drivers did not load... :/

Well, Safemode isn't designed for that.
Check the services tab, they will be enabled there, so they can work properly. Nothing bad will happen if you disable them from the startup tab

Ohh, cool. But technically speaking, doesn't that mean that they will start up with the system anyway? So whats the point in disabling them in msconfig?

My PC boots faster when I disable them, and just leave AVG. It really helps (at least on my PC).

For example, the display service starts, I can use the driver properly, but the Catalyst app isn't loaded (which takes some time to open).

the items in your startup tab that relate to your LAN, video, sound, etc. are control panels or configuration utilities... not drivers. drivers will be active unless you uninstall them, you cannot disable a driver in the startup tab.

oh, i see. So nothing bad can happen if i disable things? I really don't think that I need any of that stuff to start up except my antivirus probably. All the other stuff is just like random stuff that I didn't even know was on my computer.

Just disable 'em Only leave your antivirus...
