1. windowsXP is a pretty painless installation. it practically does it all by itself. you only need to answer a few simple questions like "what time zone are you in" or "what is your name". make sure your XP version is up to date (as much as possible at least), so that you don't have to download a million updates from microsoft afterwards.Tenko said:if I do manage to get it all set up, I don't really know how to install everything. (Windows, Video Drivers, Wireless Network, etc.) Haha, any confidence boosting would be appreciated.
you don't need one, but it's never a bad idea to have one. what he is referring to is a UPS (interruptible power supply). it can keep your PC powered for a short period of time if the power goes out (so you can properly shut it down), but more importantly it helps to regulate the AC voltage going into your PSU.Tenko said:Also, for my outlet strip do I need a Battery Backup one because the guy at Best Buy said I should get one even though it was $40.
I have personally built around 10Tenko said:How many computers have you guys built?
this means connecting everything up on a... (yep, you guessed it...) a table .this is done to make sure everything works before you actually install it into the case. if something doesn't work right you can diagnose and fix it much easier outside of the case.Tenko said:Lastly, whats a table test?
with most mobos, if everything works then it should beep once and you'll get video. it should perform the standard POST then bring you to a startup screen asking you if you want to configure the BIOS or continue. watch the POST screen or enter the BIOS to see that it recognizes all of your connected hardware.Tenko said:For a table test you just plug in the all the stuff and turn it on? How do you know if it works, does it like beep and make noises or what?
Are you sure you can't get by them with a little talk or something? This is how it went with me, and then they told me that it's just throwing 700$ to the wind...Tenko said:Well, I am EXTREMELY mad right now! My parents, which tend to be very strict sometimes, insist that I get a computer from Best Buy so I don't have to build it, because they don't think I can. Either that, or hire her friend to help for $150 which I can't afford. And to add to that, she said I can't spend any more money on my computer (She wants me to save for a car, fill my bank, and eventually save for college) so I cannot possibly hire that guy and she won't let me put it together myself.
I am just trying to vent my frustration I guess. It seems like I had the best dream computer ever but now it turns out I won't be able to get it. I have been looking at other options earlier mentioned and they don't look to match up to mine but my parents are being unreasonable...
Well, the computer that I would be getting other then my dream one, would almost cost the same amount, but wouldn't be AM2, it would be 939, but would already be put together (besides the fans, PSU, video card, and wireless network). I really want my computer but if I can't have it then I guess this will have to do..

Sadly, this is most likely what I will be limited to. Will it run a LOT worse then my dream PC or will it just run a little bit slower? Also, is there anything really bad (or good?) about this PC? Third, on the wireless card it says "System Requirements Intel® Pentium®-class PC " does that mean it will or won't work with the above pc? Fourth, on the Anti-Virus it says "
PC Processor Type Intel® Pentium® processor or equivalent " and once again, will the above PC work with it or not? Lastly, would it be very hard to set this up with the new parts, and how hard is it to set up a wireless network?
Well, thanks for the ten pages of help, and any help you give me after this (even though it seems like the other ten pages were wasted ),
Tenko
Yes, that is a good point. Installing windows is going to be a pain, since (1) it'll go slowly since I need to format & then install, and (2) I have never done it before so I might accidentally do something wrong... Though it probably won't be that hard...Tenko said:Ok, thanks. I was just a little nervous about it haha because it said Intel Pentium PC class but that one was AMD, but I guess it just meant Intel, or equivelent?
Well, I guess there is one good thing about this. I will get it quicker and it will be set up quicker. Thats about it though, I would way rather put it together myself, but I guess that just isn't happening.
