    I always have Google Chrome open. Is it worth trying another browser (I have IE, firefox and Opera all installed) for a while to see if there's any difference?

    OK, I'm keeping Chrome closed. I have to use a browser of some sort in the meantime (for example to post this) so for now I'm using IE.

    It did seem to go when I deleted Chrome, but I was a bit nervous that it might be shapeshifting around so I got the laptop wiped and the OS reinstalled professionally - I was running short of both time and patience and needed it conclusively sorted!

    Thanks again for trying to help - I'll use the preventive software you recommended to hopefully stop it happening again.
