Solved Also Google Firefox redirects, and Malwarebytes useless

Hello. Like athelander's recent post, I too have been redirected when clicking on Google links using Firefox. I've also tried running Malwarebytes, and when I click on it, or run it from the Start menu, nothing happens. Broni's suggestion of running TDSSKiller worked for athelander, and it worked for me too (found a rootkit, and no more redirects so far).

I should note that I did run Malwarebytes in safe mode, and it did find a trojan.

I was happy to find the 8 step post (and this helpful, informed community) and have followed the steps.

I had an issue saving my GMER log, though. After running the scan, I clicked Save to save the log, and the program froze, and wouldn't respond. I had to reboot my computer in fact (I hope that wasn't a terrible idea).

I have a feeling that there are other problems lurking on my computer. I've recently had issues with people somehow trying to steal certain video game accounts, and with that, these redirects, trojans and very poor PC performance as of late, I'm a bit concerned.

Both Avira and Avast found no viruses, but Malwarebytes did (in safe mode) so I will link the files I have, and see what kind of feedback I get, and wait to see what steps I should take.

The Attach.txt file said not to post it, but to zip it and attach, so I'll do that (unless it's preferred I copy paste, which of course I'll do if asked).

If the GMER log is very crucial I'll run it again, and hope it saves without issue. Otherwise, I may need help figuring out why the program stopped responding when trying to save.

Thanks ahead of time,
Long-winded Dave

Hijackthis.log

I also ran Hijackthis, and I suppose I should add this log in case it's helpful (this was run before I ran TDSSkiller)

[HJT log removed - Broni]

Welcome aboard :)

We don't use HJT around here anymore.

Please, never zip any logs.

You're running two AV programs, Avast and Avira.
One of them has to go.

When done....

Will MBAM not run in normal mode?

Download MBRCheck to your desktop

Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (Vista and Windows 7 users, right click and select Run as Administrator).
It will show a black screen with some data on it.
Enter N to exit.
A report called MBRcheckxxxx.txt will be on your desktop
Open this report and post its content in your next reply.

Thanks very much. I'll follow suit and also stop using HJT, as I'm sure there are suitable alternatives to be found here.

I'll be sure not to zip any logs anymore. I was a bit confused between the instructions for the forums and the full caps warning at the top of the log not to post it unless it's zipped. My initial thought was to copy/paste, so I guess it's best to listen to your gut :p.

I'll be sure to ditch one of the AV programs. While reading through some posts here, I was reminded that two AV's are less secure than one, glad to see that advice reinforced.

As for MBAM, it wasn't working in normal mode. Start menu, shortcut, or even finding it in program files all had me clicking and then nothing happening. After running TDSSKiller, though, seems to work fine. Although I did find that trojan when running MBAM in safe mode, so I'm not certain what did the trick.

Here's the unzipped Attach.txt file, and the following post will have MBRCheck's log.

Thanks a ton for the help, and the rapid reply. Greatly appreciated!

Done!

MBRCheck log looks good :)

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  1. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  2. Close any open browsers.
  3. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
NOTE1. If Combofix asks you to install Recovery Console, please allow it.
NOTE 2. If Combofix asks you to update the program, always do so.
    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.
  4. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  5. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  6. Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt"
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Make sure, you re-enable your security programs, when you're done with Combofix.

DO NOT make any other changes to your computer (like installing programs, using other cleaning tools, etc.), until it's officially declared clean!!!

Here's the Combofix log. I'll be sure not to install anything new until given the go ahead. Thanks again.

Uninstall Error Fix.
Registry tools are not recommended and here is why: http://miekiemoes.blogspot.com/2008/02/registry-cleaners-and-system-tweaking_13.html

=========================================================================

1. Please open Notepad
  • Click Start , then Run
  • Type notepad .exe in the Run Box.

2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

Code:
File::
c:\windows\ALCMTR.EXE

Driver::
qluqabjn
RushTopDevice2
DualCoreCenter

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center]
"AntiVirusOverride"=-

3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs again, so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

5. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

CFScript.gif

6. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please post the following reports/logs into your next reply:
  • Combofix.txt

Alrighty. I have done as directed, saving the file, and dragging it over as the fancy animation shows (that's pro btw, perhaps I'm too easily impressed).

I encountered a small bump in the road, although I think things worked out overall. When I first dragged the .txt file over the ComboFix icon, it started up as expected, but I encountered an Error. It told me it couldn't rename ComboFix to ComboFix(2), saying I should use numerals etc (I'm assuming the parentheses were the issue).

Not knowing what else to do, I just tried dragging the file again. The second time worked fine, ComboFix started up and ran just like the first time, and I'll link the log below. Hopefully it worked correctly, and didn't just run the program without the new info I dragged over.

Hmm...I took a look at the log, and I still see Error Fix, perhaps there was an issue with ComboFix being renamed. Ignorance isn't always bliss!

I decided to run through the steps again (I hope that's alright), following them exactly. ComboFix ran again, and it worked fine. I saved the log under a different name, but after checking ComboFix.txt, it seems to overwrite automatically.

So here is the newest ComboFix.txt, still showing Error Fix, but perhaps it's supposed to? Apologies for the complications.

You did fine.
Regarding "ErrorFix", I wanted you to uninstall it through Add\Remove.
If you did (let me know), what's left is probably some leftover.
We can remove it in our next step.

How is redirection?

  • Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows: OTL.txt and Extras.txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post them back here.

Firefox is normally my default browser. After running ComboFix, I have to re-affirm that I want Firefox as my default browser. Is that supposed to happen? My guess is that Windows wishes IE to be default, and resets the setting, is that correct?

Rather troublingly, I should note that after doing all these steps and changes, my CPU is running very poorly compared to earlier. It's very noticeable while running games, where my settings were at appropriate levels before, but now the game runs extremely poorly with those same settings. Specifically the settings that rely on CPU and not GPU have had to be set at the lowest settings now. Starting the games is taking twice as long, and all the loading screens are taking much much longer to load as well.

I really hope we can get my computer running as well as it did before, when this is all said and done. Perhaps I need to download some new drivers or something that may have been reset during these processes?

I don't mean to sound ungrateful, I would prefer a slower clean computer over a speedy computer at risk, and am very thankful for the help. I sincerely hope I can have a clean machine that runs as well as the hardware allows. Thanks again.

Doh, wasn't sure about ErrorFix. I just went to Add/Remove, and can't even find ErrorFix on the list. So I'm not sure about that.

As for the redirect, I haven't had a single issue with that (great news and thanks a ton).

Running OTL now, so I'll brb.

First of all, we're not done yet.
Our main mission, so far was to fix redirection issue, which we did.

Don't worry about ErrorFix, if it's not listed in Add\Remove. I just wanted to know.

My guess is that Windows wishes IE to be default, and resets the setting, is that correct?
Actually, Combofix did it, but I see, you "fixed" it.

Go on....

Just want to re-affirm that I greatly appreciate the help, and in mentioning the CPU performance, I'm simply sharing all changes that I notice in an effort to be thorough, and don't mean to complain. Thanks a ton.

I understand and I'm glad you keep me updated :)

Update your Java version here: http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

Note 1: UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software offered with the Java update. The pre-checked toolbars/software are not part of the Java update.

Note 2: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. If you don't want to run another extra service, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click OK and restart your computer.

Now, we need to remove old Java version and its remnants...

Download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
  • Run JavaRa.exe (Vista users! Right click on JavaRa.exe, click Run As Administrator), pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.

When I tried to update Java, I got an error. I had tried updating Java before, a few times, and got the same error, and wasn't sure what to do.

1st window
Warning - Java(TM)Update
bin/jp2ssv.dll: Old File not found. However, a file of the same name was
found. No update dne since the file contents do not match.

2nd Window
Java Setup
Error 1722. There is a problem with this Windows
Installer package. A program run as part of the setup
did not finish as expected. Contact your support
personnel or package vendor.

My support personnel is a buddy of mine who put together my computer. However, he's out of town. Normally I'd defer to him to help with these problems, but in an effort to be a bit more computer independent and literate, I made my way here to Techspot :)

Anyway, not sure how to update Java given this error. Should this be addressed before I continue with the rest?

Run JavaRa first to remove all old Java installations.

Then try to update Java again, but make sure to download "offline" installation file.

Running JavaRa and then getting Java updates worked great, although I didn't see any offline installation file. It seems I have the current version, though, when going to update it again it says I have the recommended version. I hope that's alright, and that I didn't leave room for something to get through.

I ran JavaRa again after getting the newest version, and all seems well (it did remove older java stuff)

Here is the OTL log

I wondered about Avira myself, given it should update automatically, and I just got it a few days ago. For that matter, shouldn't Firefox and IE update as well? I'm sure I've updated them when prompted, so it seems odd.

I'm running ESET atm, should be done soonish.

In addition, on start-up, a bubble pops up, bottom right of the taskbar, warning me that my computer may be at risk, antivir desktop may be out of date. Seems like a standard windows warning. Will this disappear when all is said and done?

Try to update Avira manually and keep checking on it over next couple of days.
If you still have to update it manually, reinstall it.
The infections might have corrupted it a little.

Sorry for missing IE6.
Yes, absolutely, update it to at least version 7.

Regarding Firefox, it looks like SecurityCheck glitch, because 3.6.10 version is the latest.
